The Volunteers bombed the Watergate Bridge 3 times, why did the US military escape

After 14 years of arduous struggle, the Chinese people finally emerged from the misery of being invaded by foreign enemies and ushered in the birth of New China. At 3 o'clock in the afternoon of the same day, 300,000 people in Beijing gathered in Tiananmen Square, and the great leader *** announced to the world from the tower of Tiananmen Square: "The **people** of the People's Republic of China was established today!" ”

A solemn announcement, like a shocking drum, made the 300,000 spectators enthusiastic, and the applause lasted for a long time. This proclamation has enabled the Chinese people to live a new era of being masters of their own affairs, and has also made New China stand at a turning point in history.

However, at this critical moment, the U.S. military burned the flames of war to the Yalu River, bringing new challenges to China, which had just regained its vitality.

Figure 2: Show my Chinese majesty! On June 25, 1950, the Korean War broke out, and the Korean army suffered huge losses and continued to retreat under the difficult situation of shortage of materials and being exposed to the enemy before and after.

By September 29, the United States and United Nations soldiers were advancing northward, approaching the "38th parallel." However, in the face of strong pressure, the Chinese volunteers resolutely threw themselves into battle, thwarted the enemy's attack with heroic and tenacious spirit and excellent military tactics, and successfully stabilized the battle line near the "38th parallel", showing the heroic and indomitable spirit of the Chinese people.

The behavior in Figure 3 poses a serious threat to China's peripheral security, as Prime Minister *** once warned: "The Chinese people love peace, but in order to defend peace, they have never and will never shy away from resisting wars of aggression." ”

When North Korea turned to China for help late at night on October 1, 1950, it was faced with a difficult decision.

Figure 4 shows the urgent need for rejuvenation of the motherland and the critical situation in North Korea, and no matter which side you choose, you will face the consequences of not being able to do so. However, he firmly chose to lead our soldiers to resist US aggression and aid Korea, which shows his courage and determination, and also shows his deep love for our country and nation.

1.On October 27, 1950, during a meeting with Zhou Shizhao, he made the following statement in response to the decision to resist US aggression and aid Korea: "The goal of US imperialism to attack Korea is very clear, and the spearhead is directly aimed at the northeast of our country.

** He also stressed that China and the DPRK are interdependent, and if we ignore them, the US imperialists will naturally think that they are invincible and are bound to gain an inch, and if there is another incident similar to the Japanese invasion of China, it will be more than worth the loss. ”

2.On October 27, 1950, in front of his friend Zhou Shizhao, he expressed his views on the decision to resist US aggression and aid Korea. He said that the intentions of US imperialism are obvious, and the spearhead is directed at the northeast of our country, and if the DPRK is occupied by US imperialism, even if they have not yet crossed the Yalu River, the people of Northeast China will always be under threat.

** He also stressed that China and the DPRK are interdependent, and if we ignore them, the US imperialists will naturally feel that they are invincible and are bound to gain an inch, and if there is another incident similar to the Japanese invasion of China, it will be more than worth the loss.

** He also said that the relationship between China and the DPRK is close, and if we ignore it, the US imperialists will naturally think that they are invincible and are bound to gain an inch, and if there is another incident similar to the Japanese invasion of China, it will be more than worth the loss. ”

4.On October 27, 1950, ** held talks with Zhou Shizhao, and in response to the decision to resist US aggression and aid Korea, he made the following statement: "The intention of US imperialism to attack North Korea is very obvious, and the spearhead is directly aimed at the northeast of our country.

** He also stressed that China and the DPRK are closely interdependent, and if we ignore them, the US imperialists will naturally feel that they are invincible and will inevitably gain an inch, and if there is another experience of the Japanese invaders invading China, it will be more than worth the loss. ”

At that time, Taiwan had not yet been returned to China, and Vietnam was also a worrying sword. If North Korea gets out of control again, then we could fall into the trap of the United States. For true peace, we must not only defeat the enemy, but also make the enemy fearful.

In October 1950, the Chinese People's Volunteers bravely and fearlessly blew up three Watergate Bridges, demonstrating our courage and determination to the world.

** The 12 divisions led by the commander achieved brilliant results in the first year, with five battles and five victories, annihilating more than 230,000 enemy troops, including more than 80,000 American troops.

In June of the following year, the U.S. forces were forced to retreat from the Yalu River and return to the vicinity of the 38th parallel, and the northern territory of Korea was recovered. The tide of the war gradually turned around, and the US military shifted from offensive to strategic defense.

In the Battle of Changjin Lake, the U.S. army suffered heavy losses, with a attrition rate of up to 60%. Among them, the 31st Regiment of the Seventh Infantry Division was completely annihilated, which is the Polar Bear Corps in the movie "Changjin Lake".

Fortunately, the 5th and 7th Marine Regiments, under the leadership of Commander Smith, managed to break through the encirclement of the Volunteer Army, retreat to Xiajieyuli, and join up with the headquarters of the 1st Marine Division and the 1st Regiment.

At the same time, they built field airfields in Xiajiayuli and Gutuli to make full preparations for retreat.

In Figure 9, the intentions of our volunteers are already obvious, they have set up many ambushes, ready to annihilate the American troops who retreated to Jieyu in one fell swoop. In the face of the onslaught of the volunteers, the American troops were frightened, and they only thought about retreating.

Smith understands if he can't let him"Ace Army"Retreat, they could become prey to the volunteers, such losses Smith did not dare to imagine, so he had to order a retreat.

Although Smith was aware of the danger, he insisted that his major general convey to the soldiers: "We are not retreating, we are just changing the tactics of the offensive." "In order to evacuate safely, they had to start from the port of Hungnam on the east coast of North Korea, and to get to the port of Hungnam, they had to pass through the Watergate Bridge, so the Watergate Bridge became a vital passageway.

In the face of the possible escape of the US military, the Tu-11 volunteers resolutely refused to let it succeed. They spared no effort to encircle the US troops in their predetermined "pockets", stubbornly defending them during the day, and in the middle of the night, they would carry out the second plan of blowing up the Watergate Bridge in order to completely stop the US army's retreat plan.

Watergate Bridge, which is located about 6 years south of Gutuli6 km, 8Although the 8-meter suspension bridge hangs above the abyss, its importance is self-evident.

Once the bridge is damaged, the US military personnel can escape, but their large ** equipment will be trapped in place and cannot be taken away. However, the U.S. military was unwilling to give up, so they engaged in a fierce tug-of-war with the volunteers at the Watergate Bridge.

Figure 13: Winter in North Korea with snowflakes. The volunteer soldiers held their ground in the midst of hunger and bitter cold, and although many soldiers suffered from frostbite, they remained strong and unyielding.

Song Shilun, commander of the Ninth Army Corps of the Volunteer Army, saw this scene and thought that the war could not be delayed any longer. He gave an urgent order to the 127th Regiment of the 58th Division of the Twentieth Army to blow up the Watergate Bridge no matter what.

Figure 14: The amazing counterattack of the Watergate Bridge - the blown up bridge has been repaired! On December 1, 1950, the engineers of the 127th Regiment fought valiantly in the bitter cold and successfully blew up the Watergate Bridge.

The volunteers were extremely proud of this achievement, however, only two days later, a shocking fact appeared - the blown up Watergate Bridge was actually restored to its original state!

It turned out that it was all about Smith. When he learned that the Watergate Bridge had been blown up, he immediately arranged for the engineering battalion to repair it, and it took only two days to build a wooden bridge!

Although the engineers of the 127th Regiment risked their lives to blow up the Watergate Bridge, the bridge was brought back to life thanks to Smith's careful arrangement. This scene makes people sigh at the complexity of human nature and the power of wisdom.

The sight of Figure 15 shocked the volunteer soldiers, but it did not deter them, because the volunteer soldiers had a strong will like a torrent of steel. In the face of difficulties, they forged ahead bravely and rushed to the Watergate Bridge again.

This time, they not only succeeded in blowing up the wooden bridge that the U.S. military had just built, but also destroyed their bridge construction materials. Although this made Smith angry, he insisted that the army retreat intact, so he sent in engineering troops again.

Just three days later, a new "Watergate Bridge" made of steel and wood was born.

In Figure 16, General Song Shilun was very anxious, but at this time there was no way out, so he could only resolutely give the order to blow up the Watergate Bridge for the third time. As night fell, two "death squads" consisting of the 27th Division of the 80th Army quietly advanced in the snow.

The enemy army has regarded the Watergate Bridge as a place of life and death, and it is heavily guarded day and night. The soldiers of the "death squad" were spotted by the enemy as they cautiously approached the Watergate Bridge.

Bullets rained down, and many soldiers were strapped to explosives, and they were detonated by the bullets in an instant, which was very heavy. But they didn't flinch, and continued to move forward, stepping on the bunker that their companions had built out of flesh and blood.

There was a loud bang in Figure 17, and the volunteers smiled with relief, knowing that this was a sign of success for their comrades. This is the third time that the volunteers have blown up the Watergate Bridge, and the damage to the bridge is also very serious, and it will take at least half a year to repair.

However, the strength of the United States in the military industry at that time was far more than that, and it took our army a lot of manpower and material resources to blow up the Watergate Bridge, and it did not take long for the US military to repair it again.

This time, the Watergate Bridge was built by the M-2 steel girders urgently produced by Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and then airdropped to North Korea by plane, and the US military carried out emergency construction, which took only two days from beginning to end.

After the bridge was repaired, the U.S. troops withdrew at a rapid pace, but the Volunteers sent the 20th Regiment of the 58th Division of the 172nd Army to intercept it. However, the weather was bad that day, dropping below freezing, and a violent snowstorm made the march extremely difficult.

Although only one team managed to arrive, they froze to death on the ground due to the cold weather. Although the battle of the "Three Bombings of the Watergate Bridge" sacrificed countless volunteers, it failed to complete the task in the end, which is a fact worthy of our deep thought.

Figure 19 Some people believe that our army did not go all out in the Battle of Changjin Lake, but they do not know the truth. From the beginning of the battle on November 27, 1950 to the third blowing up of the Watergate Bridge, the Volunteer Army has not received any supplies for 13 consecutive days.

At that time, the logistics department was extremely short of supplies, and by the last few days, they were almost running out of food and ammunition. Therefore, the third time the Watergate Bridge was blown up, and it was not easy to do everything possible to complete the task to the limit when there was an extreme shortage of ammunition.

The tasks of the more than 20 engineering detachments in the early stage included the construction of airfields and the widening of roads, and they had a wealth of engineering equipment and repair materials, so the repair of the Watergate Bridge was not a problem at all.

Even if the Watergate Bridge were blown up, the U.S. forces would be able to withdraw to Hungnam Port because the length and damage of the bridge was limited to preventing them from transferring all heavy equipment at the same time, and if the situation was urgent, they could choose to abandon the heavy equipment and evacuate the Watergate Bridge.

The U.S. military has long been motorized, and there are a large number of cars in Xingnan Port, and all of them can ride as long as they leave the Watergate Bridge. Although the heavy equipment is discarded, the firepower and covering ability will decrease, but the volunteer army does not have a large heavy **, and has always relied on iron-blooded steel bones.

If the volunteers continue to pursue, the U.S. military can send air force support, which will be even greater.

Figure 22, the severe cold weather at that time greatly affected the physical condition of the volunteers, weakened their combat ability, and made the pursuit difficult. Moreover, how can their manpower outcompete the mechanized forces of the United States?

At that time, the pursuit environment was harsh, and the artillery fire was intensive, which was unimaginable. Therefore, as their descendants, we have no reason to accuse them, they were one of the few infantry units in the world at that time.

Although they seem ordinary, they have pure and noble qualities and a strong will. Their temperament is simple and humble, and they are broad-minded and beautiful. They are like the lovely people in the books, although they are low-key and simple, but they are deeply hidden.

Although China was still relatively backward militarily and economically at that time, the strong will and national dignity of the Chinese people were inviolable. Whether it is the victory of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea or the "defeat" of the Watergate Bridge, the United States and the international community have seen that China is no longer a weak country that can be bullied at will, and China's voice cannot be ignored.

Perhaps a military conflict between China and the United States was inevitable at the time, but that battle awakened the pursuit of a great purpose that was embedded in Chinese history and culture.

After a century of humiliation and defeat, the Chinese people have finally stood up!

China has made brilliant achievements in the military field, which is the best commemoration of our ancestors and the best reward for their hard work. Their sacrifices and efforts have finally brought China a leading position in the military field and made China stand tall at the top of the world.
