Can drinking red wine prevent prostate cancer?

Mondo Health Updated on 2024-02-05

February 4 is World Cancer Day, which coincides with the upcoming drinking season of the 2024 Spring Festival, red wine has long been considered to have some health benefits, and there is no consensus in the scientific community on whether red wine can prevent prostate cancer. Today, I would like to invite Liu Shiyong, director of the Department of Urology of our hospital, to popularize science.

The "right and wrong" of red wine and cancer

First, one of the most widely studied ingredients in red wine is polyphenols, especially a natural substance known as resveratrol, which is thought to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that are thought to be beneficial for cancer prevention. However, current studies have not fully demonstrated that resveratrol can directly prevent prostate cancer.

On the other hand, studies have pointed out that excessive alcohol intake may be associated with an increased risk of some cancers, including prostate cancer. Therefore, drinking alcohol should be within a moderate range, as excessive drinking may cause negative health effects.

In addition, some epidemiological studies have shown that residents of some Mediterranean countries, whose diet contains more red wine, have a relatively low risk of prostate cancer. However, such observations do not determine whether red wine directly plays a preventive role or is related to other healthy lifestyle factors.

Staying away from carcinogenic factors can better prevent cancer.

Director Liu pointed out that because the incidence of prostate cancer is not particularly clear, there is no definite way to prevent the occurrence of prostate cancer, and it is recommended to actively prevent it under the guidance of urologists and stay away from carcinogenic factors.

How can I prevent prostate cancer?

According to Director Liu, some epidemiological reports show that the occurrence of prostate cancer is related to smoking, and non-smoking and staying away from second-hand smoke are important factors in the prevention of prostate cancer.

In addition, there is no clear evidence from large studies that any food or drug, such as lycopene or finasteride, has a specific preventive effect on prostate cancer.

Early recognition of prostate cancer symptoms.

Prostate cancer usually has no obvious symptoms in its early stages, but as the disease progresses, patients may experience the following symptoms:

1.Dysuria.

The enlarged glands of prostate cancer compress the urethra, resulting in progressive dysuria, which is manifested as thin urine line, short range, slow urine flow, interrupted urine flow, post-urine dripping, incomplete urination, and laborious urination.

2.Urinary frequency, urgency.

The tumor compresses or invades the bladder, neck, or urethra, resulting in symptoms such as urinary frequency, urgency, and in severe cases, urinary incontinence.

3.Haematuria. Prostate cancer invades the blood vessels in the neck of the bladder, which may lead to the rupture of the blood vessels, resulting in hematuria, which usually manifests as ** gross hematuria.

4.Pain. People with prostate cancer may have pain in the pelvic area, lower abdomen, lower back or back, sometimes radiating to the base of the thigh or groin area.

5.Erectile dysfunction.

Prostate cancer may invade** the corpora cavernosa or pelvic plexus, causing erectile dysfunction.

6.Systemic symptoms.

Patients with advanced prostate cancer may present with systemic symptoms such as fatigue, weight loss, anemia, cachexia, etc.

Prostate cancer is prevented early.

The most important thing for the prevention of prostate cancer is to remind you to have regular physical examinations.

In general, men over the age of 50 are advised to have their PSA levels checked regularly, followed by digital rectal examination, ultrasonography, and enhanced MRI if PSA is above normal. For people with a family history of prostate cancer, testing PSA levels needs to be advanced until age 45.

I would like to remind everyone to have a healthy Spring Festival, drink less, exercise more, and have a healthy and safe Spring Festival.
