The 2024 New Year will go to the grassroots.
Today's wind is strong, which is conducive to the spread of pollutants, so we must pay special attention to observation, especially whether there is illegal sewage discharge at the drainage outlet. On the first day of the winter vacation, the "river juniors" of Zhejiang Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower started the winter river patrol and river protection work - "Hexiaoer" is the local nickname for the volunteers who guard the canal.
At two o'clock in the afternoon, the temperature in the water town of Shaoxing was close to freezing, and the gusts of wind blew even more chilling to the bone. Under the Taiping Bridge of the Zhedong Ancient Canal in Keqiao District, Shaoxing City, Sun Guojin, an associate professor of the School of Water Conservancy and Environmental Engineering of Zhejiang Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower, is marching along the thousand-year-old ancient fiber road with three "river juniors". "The Zhedong Canal was built in the Spring and Autumn Period and is an important part of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, which has extremely high historical and cultural value and needs to be guarded by us. Sun Guojin introduced. Since 2014, every winter and summer vacation, the students of Zhejiang Water Institute will become "River Xiaoer" and devote themselves to the protection of the Grand Canal. Over the past 10 years, the "River Xiaoer" has set out from the Grand Canal and traveled to more than 90 counties and cities in Zhejiang, contributing their youth to the protection of lucid waters and lush mountains.
3 times a week, it is the thunderous river patrol arrangement of the "river juniors". Dressed in blue overalls, holding a copy net and a portable water quality detector, observing the water surface conditions at any time, the river patrol work seems simple, but it requires professional knowledge and enough care and patience. "When we patrol the river, we have to monitor the situation of cyanobacteria on the water surface, observe the direct discharge of illegal sewage, and clean up the garbage on the water surface and on both sides of the river. Yang Sheng, a third-year student in the School of Water Conservancy and Environmental Engineering, said. This is the second time he has participated in river patrols, and last summer, he participated in the protection of the water system around the Asian Games venues for the first time as a "river junior", "I feel very meaningful and fulfilling".
Last year, the Zhejiang Water Institute undertook the water environment protection project of the Hangzhou Asian Games venues, during which there was a dangerous situation: in July, the "river juniors" found that cyanobacteria appeared in a broken river about a kilometer away from the Asian Games venues. "July and August are the times when cyanobacteria grow rapidly, and if not treated in time, it is likely to harm the water environment around the Asian Games venues. Sun Guojin said that after getting the news, they immediately organized manpower to clean up the cyanobacteria on the water surface, investigated the sewage pipe network of the river, dealt with two leaks, and then cleaned up the garbage around the riverbank.
Although it is a cold winter at the moment, it is not the peak period of cyanobacteria, but the patrol of the "River Xiaoer" does not dare to be sloppy. Less than 2 kilometers east of the Taiping Bridge, they patrolled the river for nearly an hour.
After completing the patrol of the Taipingqiao River section, Sun Guojin took the students to the Huashe Bridge monitoring point on the Keqiao section of the Hangzhou-Ningbo Canal. On the river, the whistle sounded, and the cargo ships were endless. Different from the ancient river channel of the Taiping Bridge section, the Keqiao section is the first waterway connecting Hangzhou and Ningbo, and plays an important shipping function.
Sun Guojin and his students walked through the dense weeds and bushes, went down to the water's edge, and cooperated to take water samples. "This point is the 'pain point' of the Keqiao section of the Hangzhou-Ningbo Canal, and the water quality of the upstream and downstream monitoring points has been normal, but the dissolved oxygen here occasionally does not meet the standard. Speaking of the situation here, Sun Guojin frowned slightly. In mid-2023, the relevant departments of Shaoxing City approached Sun Guojin, hoping that his team would give full play to their professional advantages to help solve this "pain point". Since receiving the task, Sun Guojin has often brought students here to take samples, "although the symptoms are manifested here, it may be in other places upstream and downstream." "To do this, they have to pay attention not only to this one monitoring point, but also to the upstream and downstream and even the entire river. "We are nearing completion of the overall analysis of the hydrological quality of this section of the river. Sun Guojin said he encouraged the students to actively participate and use their professional knowledge and scientific and technological strength to solve this practical problem. "Within this year, we will come up with a feasible plan to overcome this difficulty. ”
Science and technology empowered the protection of the Grand Canal is the highlight of the river patrol work of the "river juniors" in recent years. Unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned boats, underwater robots and other equipment have been used in river patrols.
In the laboratory of the School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, the "Zheshui No. 1" intelligent algae removal unmanned ship independently designed and developed by teachers and students of Zhejiang Water Institute is being upgraded. "The vessel is solar-powered and can identify and salvage blue-green algae autonomously, as well as simultaneously carry out water filtration. Liu Wu, an engineer from the School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, said, "It was launched in July last year and was also put into the protection of water bodies for the Asian Games." In addition to the unmanned boat, the students also independently developed a cycling aeration bicycle that oxygenates the water body by riding, which combines national fitness and water purification, and has become a popular experience project outside the Asian Games venues.
We will continue to work hard to give full play to the talents and discipline advantages of the school to make the water of the Grand Canal cleaner and the Grand Canal more beautiful. Xiang Chun, member of the Party Committee and vice president of Zhejiang Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower, is full of confidence in the protection of the canal.
