What is the difference between high alumina castable and ordinary refractory castable?

High-alumina castables and ordinary refractory castables are two different types of refractories that have some differences in composition, properties, and applications.

1. Composition differences.

High-alumina castable refers to the refractory castables made of high-alumina clinker as the main raw material. High bauxite clinker is a clay refractory with high aluminum content, which has high refractoriness, hardness and erosion resistance after high temperature sintering. Therefore, high-alumina castables have good high-temperature performance and erosion resistance.

Ordinary refractory castables are made of clay, kaolin, etc. as the main raw materials. These feedstocks have a low aluminium content, so the refractory and high-temperature properties of ordinary refractory castables are relatively low.

The refractory degree of high-alumina castable is high, usually above 1700, while the refractory degree of ordinary refractory castable is generally about 1300. Therefore, high-alumina castables are suitable for applications that need to withstand higher temperatures, such as high-temperature kilns and industrial furnaces.

2.Hardness.

After high-temperature sintering, the high-alumina castable has a hard texture and is not easy to deform. However, ordinary refractory castables are relatively soft and easily deformed by external forces.

3.Erosion resistance.

Due to the high alumina oxide content of the high alumina castable, it has strong erosion resistance. In the high-temperature environment, it is not easy to be eroded by harmful gases in the furnace gas, and has a long service life. However, ordinary refractory castables are susceptible to the erosion of harmful gases in furnace gas, and their service life is relatively short.

3. Applications.

Due to the high refractoriness, hardness and erosion resistance, high-alumina castable is suitable for high-temperature kilns, industrial furnaces and other occasions that need to withstand higher temperatures. For example, steelmaking furnaces for iron and steel enterprises, smelting furnaces for non-ferrous metal enterprises, etc. The use of high-alumina castables in these applications can significantly improve the operating efficiency and service life of the equipment.

Ordinary refractory castables are suitable for some occasions with relatively low temperatures, such as cement kilns, ceramic kilns, etc. The use of ordinary refractory castables in these occasions can play a certain role in heat preservation and protection, but the service life is relatively short.

There are obvious differences between high-alumina castables and ordinary refractory castables in terms of composition, performance and application. In practical application, it is necessary to select the appropriate refractory materials according to the specific use environment and requirements to achieve the best use effect and economic benefits.
