The Mogao Grottoes Digital Exhibition Center Project (Phase II), which started on July 18, 2023, together with the Mogao Grottoes Power Grid Reconstruction Project and the Mogao Grottoes Water Supply Project, are both key construction projects supported by the Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government. The Mogao Grottoes Digital Exhibition Center Project (Phase II) has a planned total investment of 295.98 million yuan, a total construction area of 8,610 square meters, and the construction site is located on the south side of Guadun Highway in Dunhuang City, about 15 kilometers away from Mogao Grottoes.
It is reported that after the Mogao Grottoes Digital Exhibition Center project was completed and put into use in 2014, the Dunhuang Academy explored and established a new tourism opening model of "total control, online reservation, digital display, and cave visit" on this basis, which effectively alleviated the contradiction between the protection of cultural relics and tourism opening in Mogao Grottoes, and was also rated as the best case of tourism management of world cultural heritage sites by the United Nations World Heritage Conference. In recent years, with the continuous heating up of "Dunhuang tourism fever", especially the continuous increase of tourists in the peak season, the existing tourist reception facilities have been unable to meet the needs of a large number of tourists in the peak season.
After the completion of the Mogao Grottoes power grid renovation project and water supply project, it will change the status quo of the original power supply facilities of the Dunhuang Academy and the long-term use of underground water source supply, and provide a strong infrastructure guarantee for the construction of the "model" and "highland" of the Dunhuang Academy.
