Introduction to UNS N06617 American Standard Nickel-based Alloys

UNS N06617 is a nickel-based superalloy with excellent creep rupture strength and oxidation resistance at temperatures above 980. Its high-temperature strength is enhanced by the addition of a solid solution of molybdenum and cobalt, while the addition of chromium and aluminum gives it good resistance to cyclic oxidation and carburizing.

UNS N06617 application

UNS N06617 alloy is resistant to a wide range of reducing and oxidizing media. Alloys are primarily used in the manufacture of combustion tanks, inner shells, pipes, and transition bushings for aerospace and land-based gas turbines. The alloy has a lower density than comparable high-temperature tungsten alloys of similar strength, resulting in a favorable strength-to-weight ratio.

UNS N06617 is also used in the chemical processing industry and as a component for fossil fuels and nuclear power plants. Evaluation of helium-cooled reactor components is currently underway.

UNS N06617 alloy is easy to form and weld by traditional techniques used for nickel alloys. The alloy has good manufacturability, although it has a relatively high work hardening rate. The hot forming properties of the alloy are similar to those of alloy 625.

UNS N06617 heat treatment

Solution annealing of UNS N06617 alloy is usually carried out at a temperature of 1175 for a time commensurate with the cross-sectional dimensions. Solution annealing conditions provide a coarse-grained structure with very good creep rupture strength.
