In November 1949, when the People's Republic of China had just been founded, the chairman personally instructed the construction of the Guanting Reservoir across Beijing-Hebei (Chahar Province) to transport clean water to Beijing. This important decision has brought stable and sufficient water resources to Beijing, and will also solve the millennium flood disaster in Beijing.
After the completion of the Guanting Reservoir in 1954, its annual water supply accounted for more than 65% of Beijing's annual water supply, solving the problem of industrial and agricultural water supply that had plagued the people of Beijing for a long time.
With the economic and social development, since 1975, the Guanting Reservoir has been expanded several times, and the expansion was completed in June 1989, the dam body was heightened by 7 meters, and the total reservoir capacity increased to 41600 million cubic meters.
By the end of 2019, the Guanting Reservoir had supplied 41.6 billion cubic meters of water downstream, generated 8.6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, and impounded sediment by 6500 million cubic meters. The average annual water supply to Beijing and other countries has reached 6400 million cubic meters per year, according to the current industrial water use 410 yuan tons, 2.6 billion yuan of water is delivered to Beijing every year.
Since 2019, another 1.4 billion cubic meters of water has been added to the Beijing section of the Yongding River, with an average annual water supply of 2With 800 million cubic meters, Beijing's mother river is gradually recovering its vitality.
The Guanting Reservoir has become the lifeline of economic and social development of Beijing and cities along the Yongding River.
