In October 1948, after the victory of the Battle of Western Liaoning, the 15th Regiment of the 2nd Column and 5th Division of the Northeast Field Army received another order, asking them to advance to the south of Shenyang and intercept the attempt of the Shenyang defenders to escape by sea.
After two days and one night of continuous marching, the 15th Regiment arrived at Xiaoxinmintun, which was more than 70 miles away from Shenyang, on October 31. The soldiers had a hasty meal and were about to move on, when suddenly a cadre came, waving his arms and anxiously shouting to the team: "You can't go, any army must stop moving south!"
This is an urgent order from the headquarters! "The commander of the 15th Regiment, Gao Ke, only learned that he was a staff officer of the corps headquarters, and because the corps commander had not yet arrived, the order had just been heard on the radio.
Faced with a dilemma, Gauck was confused and didn't know what to choose. At this time, a signal corpsman hurried over and reported to him Commander Liu's order: the troops were on standby to set off and attack Shenyang.
Gao Ke and political commissar Chen Shaokun met with Liu Zhen, the commander of the second column, and Liu Zhen said to them: "The enemy in Shenyang has not fled yet, and you are the closest unit to Shenyang, so I sent you to attack Shenyang."
It is necessary to approach Shenyang as quickly as possible, to break through the enemy with the most violent movements, to enter desperately and catch it by surprise. The follow-up troops then arrived. ”
Liu Zhen then emphasized: "To deal with the enemy who wants to slip away, only by attacking quickly and fiercely can we achieve the greatest victory." After receiving the order, the 15 th Regiment completed the preparations for emergency mobilization, combat formation, and light equipment in just one hour, and began to march toward Shenyang at 12 noon.
Although the 15th Regiment was exhausted from continuous marching and fighting for a month, the soldiers were all refreshed when they heard that the last city in the northeast was going to be liberated! The troops marched 20 miles per hour, and in just three and a half hours, the whole regiment completed the emergency march task of more than 70 miles and arrived at the road in the southwest corner of Yangshitun on the outskirts of Tiexi City.
This normally busy avenue is empty at the moment, lying there quietly, like a dead snake.
Judging by a variety of signs, the enemy was unaware of the rapid arrival of our troops. There were even some of the enemy who crawled out of their fortifications and looked at them, as if they mistook our army for Liao Yaoxiang's troops who had fled in western Liaoning.
Gao Ke seized this opportunity and led a company of echelons deep behind enemy lines, until the enemy discovered and attacked our army, then he adjusted the battle formation and made a brave attack. This trick was ingenious and effective, and the XV Regiment successfully passed through the enemy's outlying strongholds without firing a single shot.
When the troops arrived on the east side of Yangshitun, they clearly saw a strong defensive line composed of steel-reinforced concrete bunkers, which was the main defensive line of the enemy in Shenyang.
When the enemy at a distance of 150 meters discovered our troops, they quickly concentrated their fire and launched a fierce attack on our troops. At the same time, the enemy in the outer trenches on both sides, on the left and in the outer strongholds of the left and left rear also began to fire at our troops, and the enemy's mountain artillery and howitzers also began to fire at our troops.
The first echelon of the 15th Regiment was surrounded by enemy fire from three sides, and the situation was extremely dangerous. To stop means to die, and to move forward is to win. Every commander and fighter of the 15th Regiment knew this.
After four heroic assaults, it finally broke through the enemy's strong defensive line from the right side, overcame the enemy-controlled group of highway bunkers, and established a foothold in the Sharp Knife Battalion.
At this time, Gao Ke breathed a sigh of relief. After dusk, the 15th Regiment took advantage of the cover of night and continued to expand into the depth and flanks of the enemy.
In the middle of the night, deafening gunfire rang out all around, and the main battle troops came one after another, and the battle was about to break out. At dawn the next day, all units of our army were in full swing and launched a fierce attack, the enemy's defense line gradually collapsed, and our army was like a bamboo, advancing towards the Tiexi District.
Marching to the entrance of the street, the warriors of the 2nd Battalion and 4th Company of the 15th Regiment showed extraordinary reaction speed, thwarted the enemy's armored detachment in one fell swoop, and took the lead in advancing to Shenyang. The commander of the 15th Regiment believed that the city would be a tough battle, but our troops did not meet any resistance when they entered the city, and the soldiers began to take prisoners in batches.
Soon after, the soldiers, who had been our enemy a few hours earlier, walked through the streets as if nothing had happened.
A group of officers of the Jiang Army, dressed in American-style military uniforms, carried large and small cages and wives all over the street, and scurried around. Whenever they met PLA soldiers, they bowed their heads and introduced themselves, claiming that they were the head of the XX Division, and now the troops were at X, please send someone to receive their regiment; They also claimed that they had a battalion there, who could go and receive it; In addition, they claimed that their warehouse needed to be taken over.
At 3 o'clock in the afternoon, Gao Ke received a comprehensive report from all battalions and companies, and the 15th Regiment captured more than 6,000 enemies, captured more than 80 vehicles, countless ammunition equipment, and took over more than 20 military warehouses in Tiexi District.
He happily said to political commissar Chen Shaokun: "This battle was really fought, I didn't expect the urgent order given to us by the column to bring us such a big surprise!" ”
