The European Union raised its wheat stocks forecast for 2023 24

The European Commission this week raised its ** for EU wheat or soft wheat stocks at the end of the 2023 24 wheat season, as upward revisions to harvests and imports increased**.

In the monthly supply and demand data for cereals and oilseed crops, the European Commission increased its EU soft wheat stocks at the end of 2023 24 to 19.1 million metric tons from 18.4 million metric tons in December, although this is still lower than the previous season's 19.4 million tons.

The usable yield of soft wheat harvested in 2023 24 increased by 200,000 tonnes to 125.9 billion tons, slightly higher than 125.8 billion tons.

Soft wheat imports are expected to increase by 500,000 tonnes to 7 million tonnes in 2023 24, but are still expected to remain well below the previous season's 9.6 million tonnes.

The Commission's demand for soft wheat in 2023 24** remained unchanged, including an estimated export of 31 million tonnes, down from 32.7 million tonnes in 2022 23.

It is virtually unchanged for the rest of the 2023 24 EU grain**. Available barley production increased by 100,000 tonnes to 47.4 million tonnes, remaining the lowest level in 12 years.

Maize production remained fixed at 61.4 million tonnes and maize imports stood at 19 million tonnes, although maize exports decreased by 300,000 tonnes to 4.5 million tonnes.
