CHICAGO, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- A judge in Cook County, Illinois, U.S., made a ruling on the 28th to disqualify former Trump from participating in the 2024 U.S. election in the state's primary. Trump, for his part, will appeal.
The judge held that because of Trump's involvement in the "insurrection" of the "Capitol Hill riot" on January 6, 2021, the Illinois electoral body must "remove Trump" from the state primary under Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which is the "insurrection prohibition."
Trump is running again for the United States and leading the Republican primary. A spokesman for the Trump campaign said the judge's ruling in Cook County, Illinois, violated the U.S. Constitution and that they would quickly appeal. The state's primary election will be held on March 19.
The Insurgency Prohibition "prohibits those who have taken an oath of support for the U.S. Constitution and then joined in the rebellion." Previously, Colorado and Maine banned Trump from their respective primaries under the article, and Trump objected and appealed. The U.S. Supreme Court is hearing Trump's candidacy** case and agreeing to hear Trump's immunity case.
Trump is involved in four criminal cases and has been fined hundreds of millions of dollars in two civil cases. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and accused the current U.S. Biden and the Democrats of continuing to "politically" interfere with him this year. Biden is running for re-election, and he and Mr. Trump accuse each other of being a threat to American democracy. (ENDS).
