UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres' spokesman Dijarric said on Feb. 28 that the United Nations Integrated Transitional Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAM) had completed its withdrawal from Sudan on Feb. 29 local time.

Dijarric said in a statement that the withdrawal of UNIAMIS was completed on the 29th local time, and the liquidation began on March 1. A team from the Mission will remain in Port Sudan to oversee the liquidation.

Guterres called on the parties to the conflict in Sudan to put aside their efforts and resume peace talks, the statement said. The United Nations will not leave the Sudan and remains committed to providing humanitarian assistance to the Sudan to help the Sudanese people achieve a future of peace and security.

The UN Security Council decided in June 2020 to establish an integrated UNAMIS mission with a mandate to assist Sudan during its political transition; helping to advance the peace process in Sudan; help build peace and the rule of law and protect civilians; Mobilize all parties to provide assistance to Sudan, coordinate humanitarian relief, etc.

By a resolution adopted on 1 December 2023, the Security Council decided that the mandate for the termination of UNMIS would be effective 3 December 2023. Effective 4 December 2023, the Mission ceased operations and began the handover of mandates to UN agencies in Sudan. (ENDS).
