"Threshold"with"threshold"They are often used interchangeably in modern Chinese, but they originally had different meanings.
Threshold: Refers to the lower frame of the door, i.e. the bottom of the door frame. In architecture, the threshold is a horizontal wood or stone slab installed on the ground of the doorway, which is used to fix the door frame, and also plays a certain role in preventing dust and isolating indoor and outdoor spaces. In a figurative sense, the threshold is often used to refer to the obstacles or conditions that need to be crossed to enter a certain field or start a certain activity, for example, "the entry threshold is high" indicates that a certain field requires a high level of conditions or skills.
Threshold: Traditionally, a threshold refers to a section of the ground at the entrance to a house that is a high transverse structure, sometimes deliberately built to prevent rainwater from flowing into the house. The threshold is also used in some places to refer to the family or home, and has a symbolic meaning, such as "crossing the threshold" in some cultures to refer to marriage.
As languages evolve and change, the difference between these two words in everyday use may not be as obvious, and many people use them interchangeably. But by strict definition, there is a difference.
