In Xuhui District, Huajing Town, Ningguo Temple, there is a quiet exhibition hall, displaying ancient ink, ancient mirrors, ancient Buddha statues and other craft exhibits, the person in charge of the exhibition hall is the former deputy research librarian of the Shanghai Museum, the intangible cultural heritage "rubbing skills" inheritor Wang Kehua.

Took over the baton and created a branch of rubbing Shanghai

While working at the Shanghai Museum, Wang Kehua became acquainted with Hu Jianning, an art collector of the Buddhist Association. In 2019, Hu Jianning donated a large number of precious Buddhist cultural relics and artworks to the Shanghai Buddhist Association, including more than 400 bronze mirrors of various eras and more than 100 stone Buddha statues and Han bricks donated to Ningguo Temple. With so many precious cultural relics and traditional handicrafts, who will manage and protect them? Hu Jianning thought of Wang Kehua, who was about to retire at that time. Wang Kehua readily agreed, and he said that it is the responsibility of cultural relics workers to pass on the art and traditional culture of the older generation. So, with the strong support of Huajing Town, Wang Kehua and his team came to Ningguo Temple to carry out the protection and restoration of cultural relics and the research of traditional crafts - rubbing skills.

Rubbing, which has a history of more than 2,000 years, is a technique that uses rice paper and ink to clearly copy the words or patterns on inscriptions and utensils. The rubbing of Ningguo Temple is mainly based on the ancient bronze mirrors, ink treasures, tiles and other small objects donated by the common people, and the traditional crafts used are mainly "plane extension" and "full-form extension". On the basis of inheriting ancient skills, Wang Kehua created a branch of the Shanghai school of thousand-year-old rubbing. At present, the rubbing technique of Ningguo Temple has been successfully declared as an intangible cultural heritage of Shanghai.

Rubbing the Chinese dragon to convey good wishes

On the eve of the Spring Festival in the Year of the Dragon, the intangible cultural heritage rubbing team of Ningguo Chan Temple produced rubbing literary works with the theme of "Dragon". These "dragon" patterns are different in shape and lifelike, and the colors are cinnabar, vermilion, Chinese red and other inks and inks, which are full of the atmosphere of the new year.

This small rubbing literary and creative work not only contains beautiful meanings and rich culture, but also integrates a variety of intangible cultural heritage skills. The rubbing pattern comes from the ancient mirror and ancient ink that have been passed down for thousands of years; The inscription of the exquisite small block is upright and beautiful, giving people a feeling of beauty; The seal is the embodiment of Chinese seal carving culture; The paper used to rub the pattern is a national treasure of China, a unique handicraft - rice paper; Even the shading of the bottom plate of the framed work is also a Song Jin pattern with the reputation of "the crown of splendor". The whole work is only the size of an A4 paper, but it is delicate and elegant, rich in connotation.

Each work here is unique, because the artist's skill, the mood at the time, and the mood he wants to convey are all reflected in the work.

Temper the "inheritor", and the thousand-year-old skills are renewed

Wang Kehua is very strict with the requirements of the **, he said: This is a skill to be passed down from generation to generation, and every process can not be "gapped".

Wang Kehua's apprentice, Qiu Weiyi, studied ceramics, calligraphy and painting, bronzes, ancient buildings and other restoration courses, and followed Wang Kehua to study rubbing after graduation. Although he is only 25 years old, he has had eight years of experience in cultural and museum work since he was a student, and his exquisite skills have also been appreciated by Wang Kehua. Qiu Weiyi admitted that there are not many young people engaged in cultural and museum work, and less than 1 3 of his college classmates stay in this industry, because cultural and museum work requires high physical strength, skills and experience, and the salary is not high, but he is full of love for this work and hopes to continue to improve his skills with **. For the future, Qiu Weiyi's wish is very simple: "Inherit the craftsmanship of the best!" Inherit first! Then think about development and innovation. ”

Wang Kehua attaches great importance to the inheritance and development of rubbing technology, and he said that he does not want the excellent traditional skill of rubbing to be "raised in the depths of the boudoir and no one knows". With the support of Huajing Town, Wang Kehua took them into the community, the park, and the campus to carry out rubbing technology experience activities, so that more people can understand rubbing technology.

This Year of the Dragon, if you come to Ningguo Temple, you might as well take a look at these "dragon" theme rubbings.
