Due to the itchy eyes caused by trichiasis, Yangyang (pseudonym) kept rubbing his eyes, which caused the eyelids to droop and required surgery**, and the doctor said after examination that due to frequent eye rubbing, Yangyang's levator palpebrae aponeurosis was severed, so it caused the eyelids to droop.
Yangyang, who is 11 years old this year and is in the fifth grade, was diagnosed with trichiasis five years ago. In the past two years, parents have found that Yangyang rubs his eyes more and more frequently, but they don't care when they see other children rubbing their eyes from time to time. Recently, Yangyang's parents found that his left eye was significantly drooping compared to his right eye, so they took him to Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University for treatment during the winter vacation.
After receiving the consultation, Lu Xiulan, deputy chief physician of the Eyelid Orbital Disease Surgery Department of the hospital, found that after careful examination, in addition to the trichiasis of both eyes, Yangyang's levator palpebrae aponeurosis in his left eye was severed, resulting in a drooping upper eyelid. After learning about Yangyang's frequent eye rubbing, Director Lu Xiulan said that frequent eye rubbing may lead to aponeurosis discrete ptosis.
It is known that the levator palpebrae aponeurosis is a fascial tissue that connects the muscles above the tarsal plate that lift the upper eyelid (levator palpebrae superioris) to the tarsal plate (a thick connective tissue plate located on the upper eyelid), as well as the ** covered on the tarsal plate. The levator palpebrae aponeurosis transmits the strength of the levator palpebrae muscle, thereby lifting the upper eyelid. Rupture, dissociation, or stretching of the aponeurosis from congenital or acquired can cause ptosis. "In general, aponeurosis disconnected ptosis occurs more often in people who are older or who have undergone internal eye surgery, as well as people who regularly wear rigid contact lenses. Director Lu Xiulan said that it is relatively rare for the levator palpebrae aponeurosis to be severed due to frequent eye rubbing.
A few days ago, Director Lu Xiulan performed ptosis and entropion trichiasis surgery for Yangyang. During the rounds on February 22, Yangyang recovered well.
Director Lu Xiulan reminded that excessive traction on the eyelids should be avoided, such as excessive eye rubbing, especially for patients with trichiasis and ** seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, if uncomfortable, it is recommended to go to the hospital in time.
