In July 2023, the largest renovation work in 25 years was launched for the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Guangzhou, and phased results have been achieved: the main building octagonal gold roof has been repaired, and it is expected that the roof of the octagonal pavilion and the paving of the south hugging tile surface will be completed before the Spring Festival. Today, the beautiful "pearl" on Guangzhou's traditional central axis and the world's largest Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is ushering in a new look step by step.
According to reports, this renovation mainly solves the serious water leakage problem of the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall by removing tiles and filling leaks on the roof. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall adheres to the purpose and concept of ensuring the safety of cultural relics and the quality of works, respecting and treating historical buildings in the city with kindness, and fully carries forward the spirit of craftsmen to repair cultural relics with "embroidery kung fu".
The first "difficulty" encountered in this project is the erection of scaffolding. Due to the fact that the main building of the memorial hall was "repaired without closing" during the construction period, the erection of scaffolding should not only avoid causing damage to the cultural relics building itself, but also ensure the safety of visitors. To this end, the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall has carried out repeated calculations and several expert reviews, and finally adopted the all-encompassing comprehensive steel scaffolding, and at the same time implemented the requirements of safety enclosure, green construction, and civilized construction, erected anti-fall sheds, reasonably arranged the safety passages of each entrance and exit, and strictly controlled the noise and dust generated during the construction process to reduce the impact on tourists.
At the same time, due to the inability to open a large area of the tile surface for "accurate consultation" in the early scheme design stage, the "research repair" of "construction, survey, and test" has become one of the biggest difficulties and highlights in the roof repair project. After the second survey and research, the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall will determine the construction plan together with the participating units, and the construction plan will be reviewed by the competent department of cultural relics to ensure the scientificity, rationality and feasibility of the plan. In the end, the repair project adopts a combination of rigid waterproofing and flexible waterproofing for waterproof construction, which not only respects the original process, but also combines the existing new materials and technologies to ensure that the quality of the project meets the requirements.
In terms of material selection, before the formal construction, the project carried out several experimental studies on the adhesion, weather resistance and waterproof effect of the waterproof material on the roof panel according to the original waterproof process, and carried out many field investigations, field tests and research demonstrations for the size, material and color of the waterproof material and the newly fired glazed tile.

After the start of the repair project, it was suspended for more than 40 days due to the impact of typhoon and rainfall. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall fully coordinated with the construction unit to increase personnel and machinery, reverse the construction period, decompose the plan into months, refine it into weeks, and implement it to days, and make every effort to promote the construction progress.
At present, the repair work is progressing steadily, and it is expected that the roof of the octagonal pavilion and the paving of the south hugging tile surface will be completed before the Spring Festival, and strive to be completed before the rainy season (the end of April 2024).
