"Two Songs for Li Yu's Servants" (Part 1) - Tang Wangjian

and the snow turned over the camp overnight, and the divine flag froze the horse silently.

Looking at the fire company from afar, I knew that the pioneer had gone to the city.

"Gift to Li Yu Servant Shooting Two Songs" is a group of works by the Tang Dynasty poet Wang Jian, with a total of two poems. This is one of the two seven unique poems given by the poet to Li Yu, a famous general in the border at that time, and the whole poem revolves around the battle of Caizhou in the Tang Dynasty, vividly recording the surprise attack process of "Li Yuxue entering Caizhou at night".

Wang Jian's poem, closely focusing on the battle of Caizhou, grasped the scene of the extremely harsh weather conditions, the highly disciplined troops, and the rapid march in the wind and snow, meticulously portrayed, and described vividly and unconventionally, leaving a very deep impression on the readers.

Snowy night hits Caizhou.

Looking at the fire company from afar, I knew that the pioneer had gone to the city.

These two sentences do not use the method of flat and direct description to write the fierceness of the battle and the heroism of the soldiers, but use the word "distant view" to create a distant perspective: the vanguard troops attacked Caizhou City on a snowy night, and set up a pre-agreed fire number, which lit up the night sky of Caizhou City.

The poet paints a magnificent picture for the reader, but at the same time leaves room for full imagination.

The poet does not directly write about the battle scenes of the besieging troops, nor does he write about the joy after the victory of the battle, but writes about the news that the troops behind them "looked at the changes in the fire signal in the city from afar" and won the victory without the main force entering the battle, which made people feel the rapidity and smoothness of the battle, thus showing the extraordinary military talent of Li Yu, the general who commanded the battle, and praised Li Yu's great achievements from the side.

The poet uses meticulous observation to capture the expressive details of the battlefield, and skillfully uses the structure to make the whole poem vivid and real and profound.

In the ninth year of Emperor Yuanhe of Tang Xianzong (814), Wu Shaoyang died of illness due to the Zhangyi Festival, and his son Wu Yuanji did not mourn, and privately grasped the military power to divide Huaixi (now Runan, Henan), and confronted the imperial court, which seriously affected the rule and unification of the Tang Dynasty. On a snowy night in October of the twelfth year of Yuanhe (817), the famous general Li Yu sent 9,000 troops, with 3,000 elite soldiers led by the generals Li You and Li Zhongyi as the vanguard, and marched 60 miles in a hurry, first attacking the military important place Zhangchai Village, and then taking a little-known path, braving the heavy snow to march 70 miles, with lightning speed, only one night, he captured Caizhou City, the rebel lair, and captured Wu Yuanji alive.

Li You and Li Zhongyi took the city first, and the strong men followed it. The guards of the city are familiar with it, kill them all, and leave the analysers to make the analyses the same. Then the door was opened. —Zizhi Tongjian: Tang Ji".

Gift Li Yu Servant Shooting Two Songs" calligraphy works.

The moon black geese flew high, and fled in the night.

If you want to chase away the light horsemen, the snow is full of bows and knives.

The enemy army broke and fled under the scenario of "the moon and the geese flew high", and the general prepared to pursue under the scenario of "heavy snow and full of bows and knives". The atmosphere of fleeing and chasing is forcefully rendered. The whole poem does not write about the process of chasing the enemy in the snow, nor does it directly write about the fierce battle scenes, but it leaves people's imagination very rich, which is very similar to the writing method of Wang Jian's "Two Songs for Li Yu's Servants".
