Metrocard will be officially phased out in 2024

In its place will be omny

According to the latest news, every subway station in New York City has officially installed OMNY card readers, and New Yorkers can "click to pay" for rides and no longer need to swipe their Metrocard.

This means that this yellow metro card will become a thing of the past.

OMNY was officially launched in May 2019 and has reached 1 billion uses. Instead of having to buy a MetroCard from the machine and top it up, passengers can simply swipe their bank card or mobile digital wallet on the OMNY card reader when entering the station, which is convenient and environmentally friendly.

Since the end of 2020, MTA has announced for the first time that OMNY will replace MetroCard. The MTA initially said it would phase it out by 2023, but that date was pushed back to sometime in 2024 due to delays caused by software issues.

The completed "Phase 1" of the OMNY project includes all 472 stations, all 5,800 buses, and more than 15,000 OMNY readers on the Staten Island Railroad. Next up are Metro North and Lirr, which will also be popularized.

The MTA has also launched a campaign called“tap on, get on”to help New Yorkers understand how the process works.

If you don't have a smartphone credit card, you can still participate in the campaignWalgreens, CVS, 7-11, CFSC Check Cashing, and PayomaticStore to buy and top up your OMNY card.

To put it simply, this is similar to the principle of our domestic subway boarding code. But for New York, such a large-scale replacement has just arrived.

Metrocard will eventually become the tears of the times.
