After three years, the sixth grade baby finally ushered in the first round of the vocabulary classic

Mondo Education Updated on 2024-03-01

Approaching graduation, many of the sixth-grade children's studies have ushered in the end of the phase, such as:

the second brush of the 100-episode historical documentary "General History of China";

Customs clearance of the RAZ series of English graded readers;

the end of the series "Classic Starts";

The end of the series of English vocabulary classics "4000 Words", etc.

Among them, I think the most important ones are:

The first round of the "4000 Words" series.

Because this set of books is in my home, it is the "leading" main line of the vocabulary part of English learning, and it can be regarded as a "textbook" in vocabulary.

Many big Vs like this set of 6 core vocabulary books very much, thinking that it is both systematic and arranged, and if you don't want to bother picking books, you can learn the European standard C1 and Cambridge CAE all the way.

After learning the whole set of six books, the related vocabulary can basically exceed 10,000.

Of course, in our case, after the first round of rough brushing, the vocabulary did not break 10,000, and it was about stable at 8500.

Let's share with you the real experience of learning vocabulary with this set of books in the past three years, and some of the feelings that have been precipitated.

First, the general process of the first brush.

We were at the tail end of the summer vacation of three liters and fourCame into contact with this series for the first timeAt the time, I thought: Wow, what a good choreography! At that time, I planned to use it as the main vocabulary textbook in the future. It's a pity that just after brushing 4 units, school started.

I waited until the winter vacation of the fourth grade to continue to book 1, and thenushered in a continuous and rapid input periodBy the end of the summer vacation, I finished the first volume in a row, and rushed into the fifth volume in one go.

But because of the time allocation, after entering the fifth grade, weOn this set of books, the speed has slowed down significantlyIt's almost the end of the winter vacation of the fifth grade, and I didn't finish the 5th volume.

And then there was the pause, and there was a full pause for a whole year.

It wasn't until this recent sixth-grade winter break that it was finallyFinish the last 6th volume

The whole process of first brushing took nearly three years.

If you have to divide it into several stages:

1. The difficulty of the full set of "4000 Words" is distributed as follows:

Volumes 1-3, corresponding to the level of European standard A2-B1;

Volumes 4-5, corresponding to the European standard B2 level;

Book 6, corresponding to the level of European standard C1.

2. And from my family's personal experience:

Books 1-4 are a stage, and Books 5-6 are another stage, and 6 of them are a bit more jerky and complicated than 5.

Second, the change in vocabulary during the first brush.

In the past three years, the baby's English vocabulary has changed in this way:

1. Before brushing Book 1, the vocabulary base was about 4300.

2. After finishing Book 3, the vocabulary stabilized at the 6000 line.

3. After finishing Volume 5, the vocabulary measured to a level of more than 7,000.

4. After finishing Book 6, the vocabulary stabilized at around 8500.

Of course, the accumulation of vocabulary is certainly not the credit of a set of books.

Although the words "4000" in my family do play the role of "picking the beam" and "pulling the main line" in vocabulary learning, we have to be honest to say that we also use other vocabulary books at various stages and on various topics.

For example, subject vocabulary books for mathematics and science, KET and PET vocabulary books for Cambridge exams, DK** dictionaries focusing on legends, Roald Dahl dictionaries focusing on a certain literary masterpiece series, and so on.

In addition, in addition to the vocabulary training, we also did a lot of reading input.

The steady rise of the vocabulary should be due to a series of "combination punches" that have played a role.

Thirdly, the features of the "4000 Words" series.

So, what kind of vocabulary book is "4000 Words"? Let me tell you what I think:

1. Core vocabulary.

This new set of "4000 Words"., from Compass Press, a set of 6 volumes. The 4,000 words mentioned in the book are not ordinary words, but quite4000 common words for high frequency and core, a set of 6 books are all learned, and the vocabulary of interrelated words can basically exceed 10,000.

Under this core, high-frequency classification idea, there is also a similar famous :

The Oxford 3000 (Oxford Core 3000 words);

The Oxford 5000 (Oxford Core 5000 words).

2. Form arrangement.

It has 30 small units per volume.

Each small unit has 20 high-frequency words, with color pictures, English-English definitions, English example sentences, example texts, and supporting audio.

Moreover,The most distinctive is:

The example essay of each unit uses and arranges the 20 words to be learned in this unit in the article very cleverlyThere are also small exercises in this example essay later, objective multiple-choice questions, subjective description questions, and the amount of questions is not large, so that children can understand the use of words to be learned from shallow to deep, and it is not boring at all.

3. Selected topics.

The content of all the examples in volumes 1-6 of "4000 Words" is all non-fiction, travelogues, people, news, sports, geography, science and technology, etcYou can not only increase some popular science knowledge by the way, but also be familiar with various original textbooks and favorite practical styles used in major exams.

If parents don't want to worry too much about the selection of non-fiction reading books, then with this set of vocabulary books, it will not be far from a set of raz grading.

So, this is also what I like about "4000 Words", focusing on English and English definitions, focusing on comprehensible input, diversifying vocabulary learning, learning words, learning sentences, learning reading, learning non-fiction, and grasping them all.

Fourth, three use the small reminders on "4000 Words".

1. Use threshold.

Yes, this set of books has a threshold, and the difficulty of Book 1 starts with Cambridge KET. Basically, children who have to pass 1500 words will be more comfortable reading this set of books.

If the baby's vocabulary is less than 1500, you can consider other more suitable vocabulary books first.

For example, Compass's "1000 Words" and "2000 Words" series, it is more suitable for younger children, in the unit arrangement, the vocabulary will be a little less, the interpretation will be a little simpler, but the interest will be stronger.

Slowly brushed to the last few books of "2000 Words", and it began to overlap with the first volume of "4000 Words".

2. The progress of learning.

As for how much to learn each time, the situation of each baby is different. I can only be honest and talk about my own situation.

1), the first 3 volumes, our overall state is relatively relaxed.

Before the first volume opens, it is expected to be one unit per day. Later, I found that the baby was in a very relaxed stateI can make a unit in more than half an hour, and the accuracy rate is also very high, so I added the amount and changed it to brush 2 units at a time. Within a year, the first 3 volumes were finished.

2) It has slowed down since the 4th book.

Because Book 4 began to enter the academic vocabulary, and the unit examples in it are close to 3000 words each. On weekends and during winter and summer vacations, it is arranged to do only one unit at a time.

3) Obviously, in books 5-6, the vocabulary, example sentences, and example texts are getting longer and longer.

When we make plans, we are all mentally prepared to try to learn one unit at a time, and if we can't learn it, we will return it, and brush one unit in 2-3 days.

Although in the end, the actual rhythm of one unit at a time can be maintained, the state is far from as easy as in the early stage.

Therefore, how much you can brush each time really depends on the actual situation of the child.

It's not uncommon to be able to finish 6 books in one go a year.

3. Articulation with Cambridge examination requirements.

Because many young children will go to Cambridge, and the first step in preparing for this kind of exam is almost always to see if the vocabulary is up to standard.

Then let's briefly correspond, if you take the Cambridge KPF exam and want to brush this set of vocabulary books, which one should you brush to.

1)、ket。

KET has an official glossary, and the vocabulary requirement is about 1500.

As mentioned earlier, the "4000" word series started at the level of Cambridge KET and European standard A2, soAt least you have to brush Book 1, and if you want to be on the safe side or have enough time to prepare for the exam, it is best to brush Book 2.

2)、pet。

PET also has an official glossary, with a vocabulary requirement of about 3500.

If you want to pass the PET test, you have to finish 3 of 4000 words;

If you want to be excellent in the PET test, you have to finish 4 of 4000 words;

If you want to excel in PET, you have to brush 5 out of 4000 words.

Why does the vocabulary of PET span so much?

Because PET needs to pass the test, you need at least 3500 vocabulary foundations. But if you want to rush to excellence (European standard B2), it is equivalent to the passage of FCE, and the vocabulary base is at least 6000-6500 or more.

From 3500 to 6500, all of a sudden, there is a vocabulary gap of more than 3000!

We passed the PET Excellence test during the summer vacation.

However, before doing the sprint, the reading vocabulary is about 7,000 or more, the 5th book of the 4000-word series is brushed, the 3rd volume of the Reading Explorer is brushed, and the listening brush is Y graded, and the listening material is about 920L-1100L.

3)、fce。

Needless to say, FCE's passing and excellence correspond to the B2 and C1 levels of the European standard respectivelyIt is necessary to finish the 6th volume, and if you want to excel in the test, you must have a solid application of the vocabulary after the number of words meets the standard.

The above are some of our experiences in using the "4000" series for vocabulary accumulation in the past three years, so what is the next action on the vocabulary?

The first round of learning is still relatively rough, so naturally after the small promotion is over, take a good round of two brushes, and digest the first volume after entering the academic vocabulary in a down-to-earth manner.

Welcome to pay attention to the mother of the @b plan, the child has a long way to grow, in this irreversible eighteen years, I will strive to help you get on the horse and send you a ride, but there is always a B plan in my heart.
