On the 2nd, the Yangtze River ** reporter learned that the "List of Key Terrestrial Wild Animals under Key Protection in Hubei Province" (hereinafter referred to as the "List") was refreshed, and wild animals entered and exited.

A total of 136 species of terrestrial wild animals are included in the new List, an increase of 14 species over the old List promulgated and implemented in 1994. Compared with the old version, 55 species of wild animals were transferred into the new version of the Directory, and 41 species were transferred out.

The relevant person in charge of the Provincial Forestry Bureau said that some of the wild animals that have been transferred out have been upgraded to national key protected wild animals, some because the centralized management department has changed, and some because they are widely distributed and large in number in our province. Some of the wild animals have been transferred because of the high endangerment level, and some because the number of wild animals in our province has declined rapidly in recent years.

Out of the "large-billed crow" has no exclusive "armor" protection.

The reporter noticed that 30 species of wild birds in the new version of the "list" were transferred out and 22 species were transferred.

Among them, 16 species, such as thrush and red-billed acacia, were transferred because they have been upgraded to national key protected wild animals. The remaining 14 species are all widely distributed and abundant common birds: ring-necked pheasant, mallard, pearl-necked turtle dove, black water pheasant, egret, common cormorant, jay, magpie, grey magpie, large-billed crow, great, starling, mercerized starling, blackbird.

Among these 14 common bird species, except for the large-billed crow, the remaining 13 species are still protected animals under the national "three haves" (i.e., "terrestrial wild animals with important ecological, scientific and social value"). Industry insiders usually compare the three lists of national key protected wild animals, the provincial key protected wild animals list, and the national "three haves" protected wild animals list to the three exclusive protective "armors" of wild animals. After the large-billed crow was listed from the "provincial key", it meant that the 3 pieces of "armor" were gone.

Yao Bo, vice president of the Municipal Bird Watching Association, said that the large-billed crow is one of the largest species in the crow family, with an adult large-billed crow about 50 centimeters long, a pitch-black body, a thick beak and a curved front of the beak. They are abundant in Hubei Province but not common in Wuhan.

Two new bird records were included in the "Provincial Priorities".

The 22 species of birds included in the list are: ribbed duck, iron-clawed bunting, quail, red-headed pochard, white-eyed pochard, grass heron, long-billed swordplover, red-bellied sandpiper, curt-billed sandpiper, red-necked sandpiper, gray-tailed sandpiper, three-toed gull, ant, Far Eastern reed warbler, spotted big-tailed warbler, spear-spotted locust warbler, green-backed flycatcher, cistar wren, fork-tailed sunbird, black-headed waxbill, red-necked reed bunting, and field bunting.

Among them, quail is the most familiar because of its artificial breeding. So, what is the state of survival of wild quails? Yan Jun, president of the city's bird-watching association, said that wild quails are not easy to see in the wild because they are well hidden, and they quickly hide when they are in danger. Only fly short distances when you have to, and then quickly find a place to continue hiding.

Among the egrets, the egrets are called out, and the grass herons are brought in. According to Yan Jun, the grass heron has a small population in the heron family, and they like to move on large areas of grass and beach. It looks a bit like a heron, but the color is different, the heron has a greenish plumage, while the grass heron has a reddish color.

Among the birds that have been transferred, two are new birds that have been discovered in Wuhan in recent years. Among them, the fork-tailed sunbird was discovered by bird friend Zhong Yongle in November 2020 at the Wuhan Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which is the 420th new bird record in Wuhan. The Lixing Wren was discovered by Wuhan birders Yang Rui and Lu Qun in Huangpi Yunwu Mountain in November 2022, and is the 450th new bird record in Wuhan.

Wildlife that does not have its own "armor" is still protected.

Can a wild animal like a large-billed crow that has lost 3 pieces of its exclusive "armor" be killed at will?

The relevant person in charge of the Wildlife and Wetland Conservation and Management Department of the Provincial Forestry Bureau said that if wild animals are not included in the list of national key protection, provincial key protection and national "three haves" protection, they are not protected by the corresponding wildlife protection laws. But that doesn't mean you can hunt and kill at will. If hunting is carried out in a hunting ban area or during a hunting ban period, especially if a prohibited tool or method is used to destroy wildlife resources, the circumstances are serious; Terrestrial wild animals that are illegally hunted, purchased, transported, or grown and bred naturally in the wild for the purpose of eating, and the circumstances are serious, will still be punished by the Criminal Law and other relevant laws.
