Safety points for the storage and use of ethylene oxide gas

Mondo Health Updated on 2024-03-06

1. Storage:

Ethylene oxide should be stored in a cool, ventilated, non-ignition source, and without electric switches. The container must be well sealed and not stored too much. The storage temperature should be below 40 to avoid**.

Ethylene oxide spherical tanks should be stored in the freezer at a temperature below 10 degrees, because the flash point of ethylene oxide is very low and self-explosion may occur, and frozen storage is safer.

The tank should be inspected regularly to prevent problems caused by tiny holes in the tank.

2. Use: Before use, the storage tank, reaction device and pipeline must be replaced with nitrogen, and the purity of the nitrogen used in the replacement is not less than 99999%。Ethylene oxide should not be used in an air atmosphere.

Laboratories using ethylene oxide must strictly prohibit pyrotechnics and the use of ferrous metals or spark-prone tools to knock on equipment.

Once the ethylene oxide storage tank leaks, it should be immediately diluted with more than 25 times water, and the sewage should be discharged into the ethylene oxide accident pool separately, and it is strictly forbidden to discharge the sewage into the sewer.

3. Equipment and environment:

EO sterilizers must be placed in a well-ventilated area and avoid being installed in places with poor ventilation and too little space.

1 meter of space should be reserved on each side of the sterilizer, and 05 meters of space for easy future repairs and regular maintenance.

There shall be no open flame operation within 30-50 meters around the sterilization work.

The EO sterilizer should be fitted with a special exhaust duct and be safely isolated from the rest of the building's exhaust pipes. The air entering the room must be able to flow through the autoclave and then out of the outside, and try to avoid dead spots.

4. Personnel training:

Staff should be trained in professional knowledge and emergency handling to ensure that they understand the characteristics of ethylene oxide and the correct way to operate it.

The above measures are for reference, please combine the actual situation and follow the relevant operating procedures and safety standards to ensure the safe storage and use of ethylene oxide. If necessary, please consult a professional security consultant or consult relevant literature.
