Comrade Zeng Maochao, the first chairman of Legend Holdings and former director of the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, passed away at 22:48 on March 4, 2024 in Beijing at the age of 92 due to ineffective medical treatment.
Zeng Maochao is a descendant of an overseas Chinese. His ancestral home is Chaoyang County, Guangdong Province, which is today's Dachao Village, Xiashan Town, Chaonan District, Shantou City. Both grandfather and father have made a living in Singapore for generations. Tsang was born in Singapore in 1932 and returned to China with his father during the Sino-Japanese War.
Zeng Maochao studied in Shanghai until he graduated from middle school, was admitted to the Department of Electric Power Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, joined the Communist Party of China in May 1956, graduated from university in 1957, and was assigned to work in the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Zeng Maochao never asked Lenovo about specific affairs because he knew that Liu Chuanzhi's talent in running the company was far beyond his own. But when Ni Guangnan and Liu Chuanzhi had a huge disagreement in 1994 over Lenovo's development route, Zeng Maochao did not hesitate to choose Liu Chuanzhi, who had stronger management capabilities.
Some people say that Zeng Maochao did not choose Ni Guangnan to be a sinner for the slow development of Chinese chips, but the fact on the table is that Ni Guangnan later joined the Ark to make a mess of the failure of the chip system; And Liu Chuanzhi succeeded.
Since 1960, under the auspices of Zeng Maochao, China has successively designed the first large-scale general-purpose electron tube computer, the first large-scale general-purpose transistor computer, the first large-scale general-purpose integrated circuit computer, and various types of computers successfully developed by the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in the following decades, equipped with corresponding external equipment and control circuits, and completed the development tasks of various models issued by the state.
Zeng Maochao is one of the founders of the field of computer magnetic recording in China, and participated in and led the development of external equipment and control systems for large and medium-sized computers such as 104 machines, 119 machines, 109 B machines, 109 C machines, 717 machines, 013 machines and 757 machinesIn 1984, he was rated as one of the first batch of "Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions to the State". He has won one first prize of the Major Scientific and Technological Achievement Award of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and two first prizes of the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The farewell ceremony for Comrade Zeng Maochao's body is scheduled to be held at 11 a.m. on March 12, 2024 in the Lan Hall of the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery.
