A start-up in Greenland, the Dominion of Denmark, has been peddling Arctic ice since this year, and its products are said to originate from Greenland's glaciers and have a history of more than 100,000 years, making it the world's "oldest and purest ice". The New York Post recently reported that the company sells Arctic ice to franchised restaurants in Dubai, thousands of kilometers away, to make cocktails. The move sparked a huge controversy, with many netizens believing that the company was destroying the environment by doing so.
The company said it was selling Arctic ice to remind people of the effects of global warming and to slow the rise in sea levels caused by melting glaciers, adding that the Arctic ice it sells is a naturally detached ice floe from Greenland's glaciers and has less environmental impact. But netizens are not buying it, arguing that transporting ice with a fleet powered by fossil fuels is undoubtedly increasing the burden on the environment. Someone commented, "It's insane. "Global warming and this business model will destroy the planet. Someone else said, "It's like doing good for the planet and destroying it at the same time." (Roshi).
