The Ryzen AI NPU debuts in the desktop market as a new breakthrough for the AMD Ryzen 8000G series

When it comes to AMD's Ryzen 8000G series, we have to mention that it is a popular desktop chip designed for low-cost systems. This series is best known for the Cezanne-based APU, the Ryzen 5000G series, which combines Zen 3 cores with Radeon Vega-based integrated graphics. However, this time at CES 2024, AMD brought the successor to this series, a new APU based on the Phoenix architecture, and was aptly named the Ryzen 8000G series.

The new Ryzen 8000G series is based on AMD's mobile-focused Phoenix chip and has been modified to fit the AM5 desktop platform. The goal of this series is to provide users and gamers on a budget with a cheaper system option without the need to purchase an expensive discrete graphics card. It consists of three retail SKUs, ranging from entry-level to high-end models, with a hybrid Zen 2 and Zen 4C based on the Phoenix 4, as well as a full Zen 4 8C 16T model equipped with AMD's latest mobile RDNA3 integrated graphics. In this series, the Ryzen 7 8700G is the highest-end model at the moment, with 8 cores and 16 threads, as well as 16 MB of L3 cache. Paired with AMD's Radeon 780M graphics card, it tops the list.

The Ryzen 5 8600G has 6 cores and 12 threads and features a full-fledged mobile ZEN 4 core. In addition, there is a third model, currently limited to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), which has four cores, including a full Zen 4 core and three smaller, more efficient Zen 4C cores. Another notable aspect of the 8000G series this time is that it brings the Ryzen AI NPU to the desktop market for the first time. It's a technology built for efficient local AI inference workloads and uses only a fraction of the power and resources consumed by the CPU or GPU cores. The performance of the Ryzen 8000G series is mainly due to several factors. The first is the switch from ZEN 3 and VEGA to ZEN 4 and RDNA3 integrated graphics, which does produce a lot of improvement compared to the previous Ryzen 5000G series.

As we enter 2024, the development of artificial intelligence technology has become the focus of attention. Both the Ryzen 7 8700G and Ryzen 5 8600G models feature an embedded Ryzen AI NPU for enhanced on-chip AI inference. This means that the Ryzen 7 8700G will have a powerful AI inference engine as a top-of-the-line model, while the Ryzen 5 8600G is positioned slightly lower. The AI inference capabilities of both models are enabled by technology acquired by AMD in 2022 with the acquisition of Xilinx, which brings Ryzen AI directly to the desktop market for the first time from mobile chipsets. In addition to the NPUS AI inference engine, the Ryzen 8000G series also has an increase in performance. For example, the Ryzen 7 8700G has 8 ZEN 4 cores with a turbo frequency of up to 51 GHz with a base frequency of 42 ghz。In comparison, the Zen 3-based Ryzen 7 5700G has only a 500 MHz higher turbo clock speed, and the architecture has also improved. In terms of integrated graphics, the Ryzen 7 8700G is paired with a Radeon 780M graphics card based on the RDNA3 architecture, with 12 compute units and 768 shader units, and a running clock speed of 29 ghz。The Ryzen 5 8600G, on the other hand, comes with Radeon 760M RDNA3 integrated graphics with 8 compute units and 512 shader units, clocked at 28 ghz。

In addition, the Ryzen 8000G series also adopts the AM5 desktop platform and has certain expansion capabilities. They support PCIe 40 lanes, of which the Ryzen 7 8700G comes with 20 PCIe 40 channel for graphics and m2 Storage. While the Ryzen 5 8500G and Ryzen 3 8300G have 14 PCIe 40 channels for graphics cards and SSDs. Currently, the motherboard chipset supports x670e, x670, b650e, b650, and a620.

For those looking to take advantage of AMD Radeon™ RDNA3-based integrated graphics, the new APU is ideal for building systems that run smoothly at 1080p resolutions, and for users who prefer to play triple-A games or edit in 4K HD, we recommend traditional CPU solutions. The purpose of this series of APUs is to provide users with a good cost-effective choice, but it cannot meet the needs of high-end 3A games.
