Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has said he will not rush to return the hamstring injured player Reece James, even if it could affect his chances of playing at Euro 2024. James has made just eight appearances this season and previously missed the 2022 World Cup with a knee problem. Last season, he also made just 16 appearances for club and country due to knee and hamstring injuries.
The 24-year-old revealed on social media that his comeback is imminent and has already started training, although he is training separately from his team-mates. But Pochettino is cautious about his comeback, stressing it's important to get James back to fit and build confidence before he can start playing.
Pochettino said: "Our goal is for him to get back healthy, to feel happy and well. Then we'll see if he has a chance to play in the European Championships, or to be ready for next season, or to play again before the end of the season. He also said they had spoken to the FA's staff, medical and performance staff to ensure James' comeback was as fit as his fitness allowed.
Pochettino also mentioned other players who have been hampered by injuries, such as Christopher Nkunku, Romeo Lavia, Leslie Ugochukou and Kani Chukwimeka, who have all been affected by injuries during their seasons. He reiterated the frustration caused by the impact of injuries on his first season in charge.
