GPU shipments, up 20

Mondo Technology Updated on 2024-03-01

As the PC market continues to recover after several disappointing years, both CPU and GPU shipments saw significant growth in the fourth quarter of last year. According to Jon Peddie Research (JPR), the PC graphics card market grew 20% year-over-year to 76.2 million units in the fourth quarter of 2023, while PC CPU shipments increased 24% year-over-year.

On a quarterly basis, total PC GPU shipments increased 59%, but not all GPU manufacturers have benefited from this increase. While Intel's shipments grew by 105%, but sales for Nvidia and AMD fell by 15% and 29%。The increase in sales increased Intel's market share by 28%, while Nvidia and AMD each saw their market share drop by 136% and 14%。

At the same time, PC CPU shipments increased by 9% over the same period, but the largest share of sales came from laptop processors. About 69% of all PC CPUs shipped this quarter were for laptops, while only 31% were for desktops. The statistics for GPUs are similar, with the desktop graphics card market reportedly shrinking by 1%, while notebook GPU shipments are up 32%.

Looking ahead, the report**GPU will grow at a CAGR of 36%, and by the end of the period, the number of installations will reach nearly 5 billion. Over the next five years, about 30% of all desktops are also expected to run discrete GPUs.

Jon Peddie, president of JPR, said that fourth-quarter results are usually a bellwether for the next year, and the latest statistics suggest that 2024 will be a good year for PC sales. Artificial intelligence is expected to be the driving force of the PC market this year, with manufacturers increasing the number as a "shiny new thing". However, Pedi advises PC makers to err on the side of caution, as AI "may not enter mainstream everyday applications until the end of this year at the earliest." ”

In recent months, AI has become the new buzzword in the PC industry, with manufacturers, OEMs, and chipmakers aggressively marketing so-called "AI PCs" to push consumers to upgrade their perfect laptops and desktops. It remains to be seen whether people will take the bait, but with Intel, AMD, and Microsoft going all-in on AI, it's only a matter of time before you finally have a PC with so-called AI intelligence whether you want it or not.
