Li Shangyin (813-858 AD), also known as Li Yishan, was a famous poet in the late Tang Dynasty. He was born in Xingyang, Henan Province (now Xingyang, Zhengzhou), and his ancestral home was Hanoi, Huaizhou (now Jiaozuo City, Henan Province, under the jurisdiction of Qinyang City and Boai County). Li Shangyin was a cousin of Du Yi, the Duke of the Kingdom of Pi, and his poetic talent was appreciated by Linghu Chu, a prominent member of the Niudang Party, and at the age of 19 he was appointed Inspector of the Shogunate. At the age of 25, he was admitted to the Jinshi examination, and then was hired by Wang Maoyuan, the envoy of Jingyuan Jiedu, as a secretary, and eventually became Wang Maoyuan's son-in-law. However, this put him in the middle of the Niu Li party dispute, and he never got out of this predicament for the rest of his life.
Li Shangyin is a poet who is widely praised for his novel and beautiful poetic ideas, especially love poems and untitled poems, which are haunting and beautiful.
