Yuzu's developer, Tropical Haze, has announced that it will pay Nintendo $2.4 million in damages to reach a settlement. Under the terms of the settlement, Tropic Haze will be barred from continuing to develop, distribute, or support the Yuzu emulator and will immediately shut down its ** and other services. In addition, the settlement led to the closure of Citra, a 3DS emulator developed by the same team behind Yuzu.
Citra's Twitter account shared an apology and its GitHub repository has been shut down. The lawsuit is against Tropic Haze, LLC, a company that the Yuzu development team may have set up to process Patreon donations. Given that Yuzu and Citra have co-founders, Citra's closure appears to be a collateral result of the settlement agreement.
The developers expressed their regret over any piracy caused by Yuzu and Citra, and stressed that they started the project out of love for Nintendo and its consoles and never intended to cause harm. But they recognized that these projects did circumvent Nintendo's technological protections and allow users to play games on unauthorized hardware, thus leading to widespread piracy. Therefore, they decided that this could not continue to happen and expressed the hope that their actions would be the first step towards stopping all piracy.
