I just attended the Shanghai premiere of IMAX "Dune 2", so let's talk a few words.
I still remember the scene of watching the first part of "Dune" in October 2021, and I watched the screening of Dolby Theater two years ago, and I felt a little disappointed with the story at the time, but I still highly recommend it on the big screen**.
At the time, I was worried that if the first part of the box office was not good, there would probably be no second part, but fortunately, the second part is still coming, and Villeneuve's Dune trilogy seems to be about to be completed.
This time, "Dune 2" was watched at moviemoive in Taikoo Li Qiantan, Shanghai, in terms of hardware, this should be regarded as the top theater in Shanghai at present, built by the Hong Kong Broadway Cinema Line, and the ticket price is also top-notch, IMAX has never seen a ticket price below 100, exceeding the previous Wanda flagship cinema Huanying Cinema.
The story of Dune 2 is connected to the previous one, and if you haven't watched the first one, it will look a little difficult. Actually, I watched the first part twice, and I didn't fully understand the plot of the second part of the week.
Let's talk about the awesome part first, the audio-visual effects of "Dune 2" are so luxurious that the old-fashioned and pedantic story is extremely shocking when put on the coat of space opera, this is a movie born for the big screen.
Villeneuve is too strong, the pinnacle of giant aesthetics, and the wriggling of sandworms is extremely exciting to watch.
The story uses so many close-ups of faces that I sat in the middle of the second row of the IMAX theater and felt like my waist was going to break after three hours.
But the first hour of the story is too dull, and it wasn't until the villain bald brother appeared that he got to the point. The motivation of the characters is not clear, the development of the plot is a bit jumpy, the so-called epic structure, that is, the vulgar space opera, the classical "chosen one" stepping into fate, mastering fate, and using the story of fate. On the one hand, you will feel that the plot is empty and weak, and on the other hand, you will sigh that the picture is magnificent, it is so contradictory.
In fact, it is not Villeneuve's "Dune" that is vulgar, but the original work of 60 years, and from today's point of view, many of the bridges are already considered cold rice, although many later film and television works have more or less borrowed from Dune, but looking at the story of the revenge of the prince of "Dune" from the current perspective, the story itself is not too attractive.
And Villeneuve's strength lies in the fact that the story that is difficult to visualize, after the necessary trade-offs and adaptations, is put on the big screen, which is very commendable in itself. If you understand the trials and tribulations that the Dune franchise went through during the cinematic process, you will be in awe of Villeneuve. If Villeneuve hadn't been allowed to shoot, I don't know who would have been able to make "Dune" beyond Villeneuve. The adaptation of "Dune" is considered a valid adaptation.
Back to the movie itself, "Dune 2" is a movie born for the big screen, and the top-notch sound and picture enjoyment can only be experienced on the big screen. The story itself is liked by some and disliked, but the graphics and sound are impeccable.

Dune and Dune 2 are both "IMAX special shooting" works, "Dune" has more than an hour of content presented in IMAX special format, and in "Dune 2", the whole film was shot with IMAX special filming, but neither of these two films can be regarded as "shot with IMAX cameras". The term "IMAX Special Shooting" is a concept introduced by IMAX in 2020, and the English name is "filmed in IMAX", in order to distinguish the new standard of "shooting with IMAX cameras".
IMAX has strict requirements for posters to be able to put the words "Shot with IMAX Cameras", i.e. "Shot with IMAX cameras", and two conditions must be met at the same time: using an IMAX camera on 15 70mm film or using a custom digital IMAX camera based on the ARRI Alexa 65; On the IMAX screen with the IMAX special ratio, i.e. 143 or 190 Open the frame up and down.
According to such regulations, it is probably only a picture maniac like Nolan who is qualified to put the words "shot with an IMAX camera" on the poster. More IMAX movies can only use "IMAX special shooting" as the promotional word, and the main feature is "up to 26% of the picture is in IMAX".
