On March 5, Meta Platforms' Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and Threads experienced a service outage, resulting in a "crash" that was unavailable to hundreds of thousands of users around the world. In response, Mate said it was a "technical issue".

According to Downdetector, which tracks the state of failures, more than 500,000 users reported Facebook service outages, about 770,000 Instagram users and 120,000 messenger users reported a service outage. The problem occurred mainly after 10 a.m. ET and lasted for more than an hour, Downdetector said.

In addition to the United States, users in countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, and Mexico have also reported service disruptions. Meta's status page shows that the company's advertising and developer platforms are also experiencing service outages.

Meta apologized in a statement for the global crash and said it had resolved the outage and provided a solution for users who were unable to log in for hours. At the same time, Meta's communications director posted that it was a technical problem that made it difficult for some users to access the service, and that the problem had been resolved as soon as possible and apologized to the affected users.

The last time Mate (then known as "Facebook") had a mass crash was in 2021. Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram were all paralyzed for 6 hours. The six-hour crash also caused Facebook's stock price to soar on the same day, with its market value evaporating by about $47.3 billion overnight, and the company's founder Zuckerberg's personal wealth shrank by more than $6 billion.

Previously, Facebook also had multiple global outages in 2019.
