Lei Feng, formerly known as Lei Zhengxing, was born in 1940 in a poor peasant family in Wangcheng County, Hunan Province (now Wangcheng District, Changsha City). At the age of seven, he lost all his loved ones, and in order to survive, he had to beg everywhere at a young age. When he was almost desperate, his hometown ushered in liberation. Under the care of the party and **, he was not only able to survive, but also to be well fed, warmly dressed, and had the opportunity to enter the school for education.
Lei Feng is full of gratitude to the party that raised him. He often compared the party to his mother, and expressed his loyalty and determination to the party many times in his diary: "I will resolutely listen to the party's words and follow the party for the rest of my life", "I will do whatever the party and the leaders instruct", "I will always be loyal to the party, defend the party's interests, and fight for the party's cause all my life." Not only did he say that, he did it. When the party called for vigorously developing agriculture, he took the initiative to apply to go down to the grassroots level from the county party committee organs and become an ordinary peasant; When industrial construction required it, he did not hesitate to leave his hometown and went from the south to the north to become a worker; When the party called on young people to enlist in the army, he pleaded many times and eventually became a fighter. After submitting three applications to join the party, in November 1960, Lei Feng finally joined the Communist Party of China as he wished, becoming a member of the arms of the great "mother".

In the early summer of 1960, Lei Feng went to the health company due to stomach pain. On his way back to the company, he passed a busy construction site where workers were toiling at work to build an elementary school building. Seeing them so devoted, Lei Feng was deeply moved. Despite the stomach ache, he did not hesitate to join the labor force and push a brick-moving cart. A few hours later, the other workers rested, and only Lei Feng was still holding on. Everyone curiously asked about his identity, but Lei Feng believed that it was his responsibility to participate in socialist construction and did not disclose his own information. Later, the construction company learned of Lei Feng's deeds, specially wrote a letter of thanks and sent it to his troops. Only then did the comrades in the company know that Lei Feng insisted on participating in a whole day of voluntary labor during his illness. Surprisingly, after this day's hard work, Lei Feng not only did not feel tired, but his stomach did not hurt anymore. He half-jokingly said, "Participating in voluntary labor can cure the disease." ”

While working at Tuanshan Lake Farm, he was an excellent tractor driver and performed well. When working in Angang Chemical General Plant and Coking Plant, he conscientiously performed his duties, was proactive, and was rated as an advanced worker and a red flag bearer in the workshop. In the army, despite his busy work, Lei Feng still maintained the habit of reading. He used all his free time to take out books from his satchel to study and constantly enrich himself. Sometimes, the lights out signal has already sounded, but Lei Feng is still reluctant to put down the book in his hand. In order not to disturb the rest of others, he will quietly leave the dormitory and find a quiet place to continue studying. The parking lot, tool shed, kitchen and other places have become places for him to read books at night. Sometimes, late at night, he still lies under the covers, reading with a flashlight. This thirst for knowledge and dedication to learning is deeply admirable.
