This is often asked by patients

Can astigmatism still be done without myopia surgery?

What should I do if I have high astigmatism?

Can astigmatism be treated with myopia surgery? OK! In fact, myopia surgery is not only about correcting myopiaBut what myopia surgeries can be done for astigmatism? Let's talk about it in detail today.

What is astigmatism?

When parallel light enters the eye, it undergoes a series of refractions, creating a focal point that falls to the retina.

If it is not focused into a point after refraction, it is astigmatism. Mild astigmatism may not be felt, but increased astigmatism may cause blurred vision.

Myopia surgery is more than just correcting myopia

Although myopia surgery is crowned with the word "myopia", myopia surgery is more technically called "refractive surgery", which is used to correct refractive errors.

Refractive errors include myopia, farsightedness and astigmatism, but because they are mostly used to correct myopia, they are often called myopia surgery.

What myopia surgeries can be done for astigmatism?

1. Full femtosecond

ReLEx can correct myopia within 1000 degrees and astigmatism within 500 degrees.

Femtosecond does not require a corneal flap, the corneal stromal layer is cut with a femtosecond laser, and the lenticule is removed through a 2 4 mm incision.

2. Half femtosecond

Half femtosecond can correct myopia within 1200 degrees and astigmatism within 600 degrees.

Half femtosecond requires the creation of a corneal flap, which requires the use of two devices, first with a femtosecond laser to create the flap, then with an excimer laser to cut it, and finally to reset the flap.

3. Smart all-laser

Smart all-laser can correct myopia within 800 degrees and astigmatism within 400 degrees.

SMART laser surgery does not require a corneal flap, but uses an excimer laser to cut the corneal epithelium, remove part of the Descemet's stroma, and then cut the stromal layer to achieve the goal of correcting vision.

4. ICL lens implantation

ICL lens implantation can correct myopia within 50 to 1800 degrees and astigmatism within 600 degrees.

ICL lens implantation does not require cutting the cornea, but is corrected by implanting an ultra-thin lens in the eye, which is reversible and has postoperative vision

In general, astigmatism up to 600 degrees can be corrected by myopia surgery. However, myopia surgery cannot be blindly chosen, and you must judge which type of surgery is suitable for you based on the results of preoperative examinations.
