United Nations, 7 Mar (Xinhua) -- Dai Bing, Chargé d'affaires a.i. of the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations, delivered a speech at a Security Council open meeting on the Sudan issue on 7 March, calling on the international community to step up efforts to promote a political settlement of the Sudan issue.

Dai Bing said that the continuous prolongation of the conflict in Sudan has caused a large number of civilians and a serious humanitarian crisis, which is deplorable. The international community should work together to promote a political settlement of the Sudan issue so that peace can be achieved at an early date. The most pressing issue at the moment is to cease the fire as soon as possible. China calls on all parties concerned to work in the same direction, de-escalate the situation as soon as possible, and create conditions for the start of peace talks. At the same time, the conflict in Sudan has triggered a serious humanitarian crisis, and it is important to ensure access to humanitarian goods. China calls on the international community, especially the traditional donors, to continue to increase assistance to Sudan and help the people of Sudan and other countries in the region alleviate humanitarian difficulties.

Dai Bing said: China welcomes the efforts made by the African Union (AU), the Organization for Inter-African Development (IGAD) and Sudan's neighbors to mediate the Sudanese crisis. The Sudan issue concerns the overall peace and stability of the region. The international community should continue to support the African Union, IGAD and other regional organizations in playing a key role in the Sudan issue, respect Sudan's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and refrain from imposing solutions from outside. At the same time, in handling the Sudan issue, the Security Council should strengthen coordination with the African Union and other regional organizations and form a synergy with regional mediation. The relevant actions of the Security Council should contribute to diplomatic efforts and avoid aggravating contradictions.

Dai Bing said that recently, the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNTEM) completed its withdrawal in accordance with Security Council resolution 2715. China hopes that the United Nations will communicate frankly with Sudan and work together to meet Sudan's actual needs. At the same time, it is necessary to sum up the success and failure experience of the Mission, earnestly enhance mutual trust in future cooperation with Sudan, and provide concrete support for Sudan's peace and development.
