The forest coverage rate of Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture is stable at more than 70%, the water quality of surface water sections controlled by 39 countries and provinces, and the water quality compliance rate of centralized drinking water sources in 10 cities is 100%, and the comprehensive index of ambient air quality is 252, ranking first in the province, is a model city for green development in the country. Students from South-Central University for Nationalities used the summer vacation to go to Xiangxi to conduct field visits to ecological indicators, aiming to gain an in-depth understanding of the ecological environment of their hometown and propose an optimal path.

At the level of forest vegetation survey, the team used analytic hierarchy process to construct the evaluation index system of environmental and economic development in Xiangxi Prefecture, and used the coordinated development calculation model to study the changes of coordinated environmental and economic coordination and the types of coordinated development in Xiangxi Prefecture from 2003 to 2012, and analyzed and evaluated the coordinated development of environmental and economic development in the region in the past 10 years.

At the level of water body investigation, the team took samples based on the characteristics of hydrogeology and hydrochemistry, and determined that among the 54 monitoring wells in Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture, 13 wells had excellent water quality, 33 wells had good water quality, and 7 wells had poor water quality. The average composite index of the 33 groundwater survey wells (including clean spots) was 2548, and the average composite index of 21 pollution monitoring wells (including hot spots) was 1935;There was no industrial and urban pollution around the 6 groundwater survey wells, and the average composite index of water quality of the wells was 1182, which is significantly better than the water quality of other wells. The groundwater quality in the state is generally good, and the protection of groundwater has achieved initial results, and the team has also measured the basic physical and chemical characteristics of local groundwater resources in the field and conducted a typological analysis.

In terms of environmental awareness research, the team found through a questionnaire survey that there are some environmental protection advocates, environmental protection volunteers and environmental protection organizations in Xiangxi, who pay attention to environmental problems and actively participate in environmental protection actions. These people usually have a high level of environmental awareness, and they are committed to raising awareness of environmental issues in society by holding environmental protection events, disseminating environmental protection knowledge, and participating in environmental protection projects. "This is also the real endogenous driving force for Xiangxi's environmental protection effect to be so immediate."

Returning with a full load, the research work has been fruitful. The team not only had an in-depth understanding of the current ecological environment of Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, but also conducted a comprehensive assessment of it through scientific methods. This research activity not only exercised the practical ability and teamwork spirit of the students of South-Central University for Nationalities, but also contributed to the green ecological construction and sustainable development of Xiangxi.
