5 January 2024 – Keppel is looking to install a battery energy storage system at its data centre in Dublin, Ireland.

The company has submitted applications to The Fingal and South Dublin County Councils to install a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at two of its facilities in Ireland's capital.

The company is targeting the installation of an energy storage unit at the Dublin 1 site in the CityWest business park, which includes two new battery storage units, two new high-voltage power skids (PCS transformers and HV RMU), two new medium-voltage transformers, concrete slabs and 24 metre high security fence including two new inner gate entrances.

Keppel aims to install a 4 megawatt battery energy storage system (BESS) at its Dublin 2 plant in the Ballycoolin Business and Technology Park to "improve on-site power quality".

Both storage systems are provided by Grid Beyond Limited, which provides grid-tied battery technology and management software.

Keppel was founded in 2013 and acquired the Ballycoolin site (previously owned by Dataplex) in 2017. The Seongsi base was built in 2000.

State-owned grid operator Eirgrid has effectively suspended construction of a new data centre in Dublin due to transmission issues, and operators are taking a different approach in the city. Some companies are looking to connect data centers to the country's natural gas network, while others are planning to build natural gas power plants on-site or use generators only.

Microsoft has previously partnered with Vertiv and Enel X to deploy a lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) and a grid-based interactive uninterruptible power supply (UPS) at a data center in Dublin, and says the project could be rolled out globally.

AshLang Data Centre Linked Data and Power Centre Services was granted permission last year to build a 183MW BESS facility on Peamount Road in Newcastle, County Dublin. The site is located less than 1 km from the Grange Castle Business Park, where companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Digital Realty, EdgeConnex, and Cyrusone operate their facilities.
