On December 23, 2023, the first million-ton hydrogen-based shaft furnace project in China built by China Baowu was successfully ignited and put into operation in Zhanjiang, Guangdong, which is the largest shaft furnace in China that uses multiple gas sources and finally realizes the industrial production of direct reduced iron with full hydrogen, marking another exemplary and symbolic step in the green and low-carbon transformation of China's iron and steel industry, and will further lead the transformation of traditional iron and steel metallurgical processes.

It is understood that the ignition and production of the million-ton hydrogen-based shaft furnace started construction on February 15, 2022, and the main facilities include the shaft furnace body, shaft furnace loading and unloading system, product cooling system, gas circuit system, raw material input and finished product output system, as well as supporting pellet system, energy public auxiliary system and information system, and for the first time applied self-developed refractory materials and 112-meter vertical belt conveyor with the highest conveying height in China and other equipment.
Different from the conventional means of using natural gas to prepare reducing process gas in the world, the project adopts the world's first "hydrogen metallurgical electromelting process" (hyresp). It is estimated that after the project is put into operation, compared with the traditional blast furnace ironmaking process with the same scale of molten iron output, it can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 500,000 tons per year.
