Winter has arrived, and the cold wind is biting.
Park Walk in Peace Park
It's still hot.
Today. It's with Xiaohong.
Follow in the footsteps of professional mentors.
Let's discover the park's winter elves.
Do you still remember the "Bird Hunting Tour" introduced by Xiaohong not long ago in the Peace Park (click to view: Egret is a guest in the Peace Park!).There are more "residents", follow Xiaohong to explore )?In fact, the Peace Park Nature Center has been conducting nature observation activities featuring the exploration of biodiversity. Since the beginning of winter, the Nature Center has carried out 36 public welfare science park walks (city park walks) around the themes of "solar terms in Shanghai", "bird watching in urban parks" and "winter wisdom of animals and plants" based on the characteristics of winter climate and the ecological environment of the park, leading about 650 groups of parent-child families to experience the eco-friendly cohabitation environment in the park.
During a park walk a few days ago, we came across a big red butterfly dressed in chestnut fluff. According to the instructor, after bathing in the warmth of the sun, they will find sheltered shelter to survive the cold winter, which is called adult overwintering.
The big red frog (jiá) butterfly
Attracted to purple sage is the coffee-winged moth, which hovers and flies and is often mistaken for a hummingbird. Before the onset of winter, the coffee winged moth burrows into the soil to arch a space and spins silk, where it pupates for the next year, a behavior called pupal overwintering.

When they came to the pond, the egret paced in the shallow water and moved the bottom mud with their feet, looking for fish and shrimp among the aquatic plantsWalking to the bamboo forest, you can occasionally encounter yellow finches and black-tailed waxbills, which are social birds that gather to drink, feed, rest and play.
Several hedgehogs also make their home in the Peace Park, and they usually come out at night and feed mainly on snails, slugs, earthworms, and occasionally during the day. If you hear a rustling sound coming from the bushes, it's probably a hedgehog moving. As the temperature drops, they dig holes in the dirt to build nests, feed their stomachs, and sleep until next spring.

There have been many other "residents" as well.
Weasels
Commonly known as weasel, it is the only ferret in the Shanghai area. Slender and agile, he is an expert rat catcher. At night, they can occasionally be found in several large green belts in the Peace Park, and when they are threatened, they will release an unbearable stench to protect themselves, so don't provoke this protected animal.
Black water fowl
There is "chicken" in the name but not a chicken, and it lives in the water but not a duck and belongs to the order Craneformes. They prefer to live in wetlands with dense aquatic plants, and in summer, they can be seen nesting and nestling with "small briquettes" in several areas of the Peace Park.
小 (pì) tī).
It is the smallest in size, good at diving and fishing, but not good at flying and not good at walking, so it is commonly known as "diving duckling" and "king duck". In winter, they have a plain coat and in summer they change into a beautiful "coat" during breeding. They live in the wide expanse of the lake in the Peace Park and raise several litters of chicks throughout the year.
Black-beaked moth
The vast majority of moths are nocturnal insects, but the black-beaked moth is found during the day. It is small in size and fast in flight, with yellow patches on its hindwings and waist. In summer, the lily is in full bloom in the Peace Park, and it is common to see black-beaked moths visiting flowers and collecting nectar among the flowers.
Big-bellied garden spider
As the name suggests, it has a large belly that grows to the size of a winter date. They can be found among the shrubs and low grass of the Peace Park. The pot-bellied garden spider weaves large webs that are taller than humans, and in order to quickly control the prey caught by the spider webs, there are both sticky webs that can stick to the prey and webs that are specially designed for crawling.
In recent years, Hongkou District has actively explored the ecological path of sustainable urban development, and in the upgrading and renovation of the Peace Park, it has not only created the "New Eight Scenic Spots of Peace" in accordance with the concept of a park city to further optimize the living environment, but also fully highlighted the function of biodiversity conservation, and set up eco-friendly facilities such as duck ladders to provide a good habitat for wild animals.
Three duck ladders are set up along the pond near the nature center to allow animals to enter and exit the water, drink and bathe freely.
Based on becoming a "nature classroom and ecological museum at the doorstep of citizens", the Peace Park Nature Center is characterized by biodiversity, low-carbon and public participation, continues to carry out various ecological science popularization activities and nature education classes, continuously strengthens the functions of "park + ecological science popularization" and "park + nature education", and strives to build a demonstration site for parent-child education, local ecological diversity and low-carbon concept practice in Shanghai.
