Myths and folk tales, as two important components of human cultural heritage, have always attracted a lot of attention. They all have a long history and contain rich cultural and historical values, but there are significant differences in their essence, function, content and form.
As a practitioner of traditional folk culture, I would like to share with you the topic of these differences between mythological stories and folk tales from the perspective of folk culture.
One. Cognitive differences
Essentially, the fundamental difference between myths and folktales lies in the worldviews and values they reflect. Myths and stories are often closely related to religious beliefs, the worship of gods, and explanations of the origin of the universe. They are largely interpretations of the mysteries of the natural world and human existence, often touching on themes such as Genesis, the feats of gods and heroes, and so on. In contrast, folk tales are closer to the lives of ordinary people, reflecting people's daily experiences, social Xi and moral values. They include fables, legends, folk jokes, and other forms, and often contain educational, entertaining, and morally edifying functions.
Two. The focus of doing things and being a person
Mythological tales and folk tales are also different in terms of functionality. Myths and stories often carry the function of religion and belief, they explain the major issues of the universe and human life by describing the image and behavior of gods, and at the same time reinforce social norms and values. Folk tales, on the other hand, are more entertaining and educational, conveying social experiences, warnings, and moral standards through telling educational stories or entertaining content.
Three. The difference between mystical and popular
There are also significant differences between the two in terms of content and form. The content of mythological stories is usually grand and mysterious, involving gods, heroes, and the supernatural, and their narratives often have a solemn and sacred overtone. Folktales, on the other hand, are more diverse and regional, closely linked to the Xi of specific cultures and regions, and more flexible in form, ranging from simple fables to complex tales and legends.
Four. The difference between the form of communication and the audience
There are also differences between myths and folktales in how they are disseminated and who are used to reach them. Myths and stories are often disseminated and documented in religious ceremonies, literary works, and art forms, and they are often regarded as sacrosanct cultural heritage. Folktales, on the other hand, are passed down mainly through oral traditions, daily communication within families and communities, and they are closer to the lives of ordinary people and are easier to understand and accept.
Although there are differences between mythological stories and folk tales, they are both part of traditional culture. You are welcome to share your views and suggestions on both. Click to follow and make progress together!
