Fall/Winter Check-in Challenge According to the U.S. Census Bureau's state population estimates, Hawaii's population has steadily declined for the seventh consecutive year, with thousands of residents leaving the islands.

From July 2021 to July 2022, the state's population decreased by 05% from 14470,000 decreased to 1.44 million. Last year, Hawaii's total population declined by the fifth-largest percentile in the country, behind West Virginia (-0.).6%), Louisiana, and Illinois (-0.).8%) and New York (-0.).9%)。

The high cost of living and the lack of affordable housing are two reasons for residents to move, in addition to wanting more jobs and higher wages.

The declining population trend has also affected Native Hawaiian communities. In 2020, an analysis released by the Census Bureau in September found for the first time that the number of Native Hawaiians living in the continental United States exceeded the number of Native Hawaiians.

The Census Bureau's report, released in October, also analyzed where Hawaii residents moved and where people who moved to Hawaii came from. The report found that between 2021 and 2022, more than 67,257 people left Hawaii, while 56,209 moved from other states.

Of the Hawaiian residents who left in 2022, 10,747 moved to California. According to the Census Bureau, 10,562 Californians moved to Hawaii.
