After the Japanese army entered the city on December 17, the headquarters of the Central China Front and the headquarters of the Shanghai Dispatch Army were moved to Nanjing. The rest of the Japanese troops withdrew from the city of Nanjing and went to their respective defense areas according to the aforementioned deployment. Nakajima was appointed commander of the Nanjing garrison and stayed at Chiang Kai-shek's official residence as the principal of the Army Military Academy. The Kunisaki Detachment, which was originally under the command of the Tenth Army, was deployed in Nanjing on December 23 as a direct unit of the Central China Front.

The main combat mission was to attack the ships in the Qiantang River and the military transport on the Zhejiang-Jiangxi Railway, and during this period, the Jianqiao Airport in Hangzhou, which was used by the Chinese Air Force in the "8.14" air battle, was also used.
