Always think of yourself as a pearl.
There is always the pain of being buried.
Think of yourself as dirt.
Let the crowd trample you into a path.

The poem "Clay" was published in 1945, but ten years later, it was criticized for its authorship. However, once a real work of art is published, it becomes a treasure of society, and criticism cannot destroy it. Forty years later, it is still loved by readers.
This small poem is the work of the author's creative power, although the poem is very short, but it also stirs the waves of ideals, and contains the author's thoughts and pursuits of life. In very popular and concise language, the author reveals a very important philosophy of life: if you treat yourself as a pearl, you will inevitably be afraid of buried pain, and if you treat yourself as dirt and let people step on the road, then you will get the joy and satisfaction of life. Some people have thought that comparing themselves to the metaphor of clay is inappropriate, but this is not understood in terms of the true meaning of the parable. It is nothing more than an indication that individuals are always ready to give everything to the people, even at the expense of themselves if necessary. The metaphor vividly illustrates this relationship between the individual and the whole. Soil, which is a rich image, can be the nourishment of plants and trees and the foundation on which they stand, can be an architectural element, and of course can also be a material for paving roads. A person's life can become a handful of dirt on the road of the people's progress, which is a valuable life and should be happy. As long as we understand it correctly from the positive side, we will find that poetry is a very noble and idealized spiritual realm that we show. In terms of art, the poems mainly use the contrast of images, that is, the comparison of pearls and clay to make the image and poetry appear more vivid and intense.
After writing this poem, four years later, the author wrote another poem "I am an earthworm", in which the author expressed his pleasure to do one"It is the dirt that is eaten"、"Lived in the dirt"、"Breathe with the dirt", posthumously"and buried with the soil"of earthworms. It can be seen how deep the author's affection for the soil is!For such devotion to the soil, the humble may feel that it is the pain of life, but the noble person thinks that it is the greatest happiness, because the soil means the embrace of the homeland and the chest of the motherland. The author said that the poet's heart"We must always share the fate with the people"In order to reflect the times, these two poems are the embodiment of the author's creative ideas.
