The transfer of ownership of the car can be carried out without changing the license plate, but certain conditions need to be met.
According to the provisions of Article 14 of the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on the Administration of Motor Vehicle Registration, if the ownership of a motor vehicle is transferred, the owner of the motor vehicle shall apply to the traffic management department of the public security organ at the place of registration for change of registration within 30 days from the date of transfer of ownership.
When changing registration, the original and current owners can choose to keep the original license plate number or change to a new license plate number.
If you choose to keep the original license plate number, you need to meet the following conditions:
The original owner must apply for retention of the original license plate number within one year after the transfer of ownership, otherwise it will be deemed to have waived the reserved right.
The original owner must purchase the new car during the retention period and transfer the original license plate number to the new car.
The original owner must ensure that the original license plate number has no violation records or traffic accidents that have not been handled.
The current owner cannot apply for the use of the original vehicle registration mark and must select a new vehicle registration number.
If you choose to change to a new license plate number, you need to meet the following conditions:
The original owner must return the original license plate number to the DMV, otherwise the registration cannot be changed.
The original owner can apply for a new license plate number after returning the original license plate number, or they can apply again when purchasing a new car.
The current owner must select a new license plate number when changing the registration, and the original license plate number cannot be used.
