Hohai University originated from the Hohai Engineering College founded in 1915 by Zhang Jian, a famous patriotic industrialist and educator in modern times, and is the first institution of higher learning in China to cultivate water conservancy talents, creating a precedent for water conservancy higher education in China. Proletarian revolutionaries such as Zhang Wentian and Shen ** studied in Hehai and embarked on the revolutionary road from here. In 1924, it merged with the engineering department of Southeast University to establish Hehai University of Technology, and in 1927, it was merged into the Department of Civil Engineering of the Fourth Sun Yat-sen University (which was later renamed many times after the Department of Civil Engineering of the School of Engineering of Jiangsu University, the Water Conservancy Group of the School of Engineering of ** University, the Department of Water Conservancy of ** University, and the Department of Water Conservancy of Nanjing University). In 1952, the Department of Water Conservancy of Nanjing University, the Department of Water Conservancy of Jiaotong University, Tongji University, Zhejiang University and other universities, as well as the East China Water Conservancy College, established the East China Institute of Water Conservancy, with Qian Zhengying as the first dean. In 1960, the school was recognized as a national key university. In 1985, the traditional name of the university was restored, and Comrade * inscribed the name of the university.
