Extended Deterrence! The US Navy s nuclear powered attack submarine arrives in Busan

According to Yonhap News Agency, the US Navy's Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Missouri visited South Korea and docked at Busan Naval Base.

At the end of last month, the US Navy's Los Angeles-class attack nuclear submarine USS Santa Fe arrived at South Korea's Jeju Island Naval Base.

In April this year, the United States and South Korea jointly issued the "Washington Declaration," in which the United States hastened to implement its "nuclear umbrella" commitments to South Korea in the face of North Korea's nuclear and missile threat.

Now the United States can basically do it, sending 1-2 nuclear submarines to dock at South Korea's ** port every six months to show its muscles and demonstrate the existence of nuclear forces.

Not only that, but now US aircraft carriers and strategic bombers have also become frequent visitors to South Korea, which the United States calls "extended deterrence" against North Korea.

But objectively speaking, the United States and South Korea do not have a standard on how to achieve "extended deterrence."

To this end, South Korea and the United States are working to complete the drafting of a nuclear strategic guideline, which is expected to be issued as soon as June next year.

The guide is three-fold:

The first is the sharing of intelligence on nuclear weapons;

second, the consultation process in the event of a nuclear crisis;

The third is how the leaders of the two countries will talk to each other after the outbreak of the nuclear crisis.

Only after the completion of the nuclear strategic guidelines can a relatively systematic "extended deterrence" mechanism be formed against the DPRK. In the future, the entry and exit of US nuclear submarines into and out of South Korean ports will become more regular.

However, North Koreans don't know whether the North Koreans will eat this set of the United States and South Korea. However, according to the consistent style of the DPRK leader, it is impossible to succumb to external pressure, and it should be said that the greater the external pressure, the more motivated the DPRK will be to confront it.

Therefore, the so-called strategic assets, including the US Navy's nuclear-powered attack submarines, appear on the Korean Peninsula, and their deterrent power is not enough to deter the DPRK.

Although South Korea will not develop nuclear weapons on its own, it will import them from the United States. According to the latest news, in 2024, South Korea said it was willing to fund the introduction of more than 100 tactical nuclear weapons from the United States to equip its own nuclear arsenal.

If a nuclear war really breaks out on the Korean Peninsula, it will be really difficult for South Korea to survive, after all, North Korean artillery can hit Seoul. This means that the strategic warning time of the South Korea-US military alliance is too short, and it will be wiped out before an effective response.
