After the case, Zhang Chengyu became an A-level wanted criminal by the Ministry of Public Security. For the next 11 years, he disappeared like a shadow into the sea of people. During his escape, he was called "mute", rarely communicated with people, always kept a low profile and secrecy, and even lived in seclusion without a regular job.
In December 2020, Zhang Chengyu, who had been on the run for 11 years, was finally arrested in Nanchang, Jiangxi. In July 2021, the Changsha Municipal People's Procuratorate prosecuted Zhang Chengyu for intentional homicide. After the trial, the court sentenced Zhang Chengyu to death and deprived him of his political rights for life. After the first-instance verdict and appeal process, the Hunan Provincial High People's Court upheld the death sentence. Finally, on November 24, 2023, Zhang Chengyu was executed.
