From November 28th to 29th, the 2023 Xiang Light Year Conference丨ESG and Sustainable Development Value Innovation - ESG Ecology Conference was held in Shenzhen. The Xiangguang Award is the first pure public welfare annual highest award in China with international advanced concepts, which is aimed at Chinese social enterprises, commercial good enterprises, good entrepreneurs, impact investment institutions and related academic research. In terms of contributing to the sustainable development of agriculture, BGI continues to make use of its scientific and technological advantages to help the selection and breeding of food crops and cash crops, and inject cutting-edge technology into the field. In recent years,BGI focuses on the ecological problem of desertification, and cooperates with Chongqing Jiaotong University and other institutions to launch the "sand film" planting systemand explore integrated solutions for desert ecology and desert agricultureto turn the desert into an oasis and help solve the problems of ecological balance and sustainable agricultural development. 
This original "sand film" planting system includes "sand soil improvement + desert 'probiotics' development + psammophyte crop breeding", which can effectively accelerate the restoration of the desert ecological environment, expand the traditional planting space, and promote the improvement of the living environment。Among them, desert 'probiotics' refer to relying on BGI's accumulation of microbial strain resource bank, microbial genome database and ecological environment information database to interpret the association mechanism between microorganisms and plant phenotypes, develop agricultural microbial technology products, and help realize the transformation of resource-saving and environment-friendly modern agriculture. In addition, BGI integrates modern biotechnology such as genome-wide design breeding, gene editing, and synthetic biology to establish a new species breeding system suitable for desert environments, so as to cultivate more super species that are water-saving, drought-tolerant, stress-resistant, and adaptable to desert environments.
Currently,The "sand film" planting system has been successfully implemented in the mobile sand dunes such as the Alxa Ulan Buhe Desert in Inner Mongolia, the Kubuqi Desert in Hangjinqi in Inner Mongolia, and the Mu Us Desert in Yulin, Shaanxi, providing new scientific and technological support for China's desertification prevention and control。In the future, BGI will face global challenges such as climate change and ecological destruction, and continue to cooperate with relevant scientific research institutions, enterprises to conduct more in-depth research and innovation, in order to provide reference experience for global ecological governance.
