TeslaTesla recently began a batch of large-scale recalls in the United States. Last month, after the NHTSA investigated 2.1 million Teslas, it mandated manufacturers to renew their Autopilot driver assistance systems for defects. Similarly, Chinese regulators have also required Tesla to do the same recall on 1.6 million vehicles sold in China, including the Model 3, X, Y, and S.
From this, it seems that the problem of the recall of Tesla in the United States and China is the same, and what is the reason for Tesla's recall this time? The main problem is that the Autosteer steering wheel of the Autopilot automatic driving assistance system is automatically turned on, which is easy for the driver to make mistakes, which in turn increases the risk of collision.
As a result, Tesla said that the recall update strengthens the visual and audible warnings for drivers, making it easier for them to know when Autopilot is effective and when manual control needs to be restored. Chinese regulators have indicated that these changes are necessary to reduce the risk of vehicle collisions, and have asked Shanghai Tesla to recall and update as soon as possible.
According to Reuters, all Tesla models in the U.S. and China are affected, and the Model S and X imported from China, as well as the Model 3 and Y produced in the U.S. between 2014 and 2023, need to be updated. Thankfully, this recall does not require a technician to go back to the factory for repair, and both China and the United States only need to wait for the original factory to release the OTA remote update service.
Meanwhile, Tesla is updating the door lock software for 7,538 Model S and X vehicles in China, and the United States is recalling 120,000 vehicles due to the same problem, due to concerns that doors may automatically unlock and open during a collision.
But so far, although Autopilot is standard on every Euro-spec Tesla, Teslas in the European market have not joined the Autopilot recall. Due to local regulations, these systems are configured differently from other markets and have different driver monitoring and warning functions.
