What is a vanadium battery?
Flow battery is a new type of battery, which is composed of a point stack unit, an electrolyte, an electrolyte storage and supply unit and a management and control unit. It uses the positive and negative electrolytes to separate and circulate separately, which has the characteristics of high capacity, wide application field and long cycle service life, and is a new energy product. Flow battery is an electrochemical energy storage technology proposed by Thaller (NASA Lewis Research Center, Cleveland, United States) in 1974. The flow energy storage battery system is composed of a stack unit, an electrolyte solution and an electrolyte solution storage and supply unit, and a control management unit. The core of the flow battery system is composed of a stack and a single cell (the stack is composed of dozens of cells for redox-reduction reaction) and a single cell that realizes the charging and discharging process in series according to specific requirements, and the structure is similar to that of a fuel cell stack.
Flow batteries realize the mutual conversion of electrical energy and chemical energy through the reversible redox reaction (i.e., the reversible change of valence state) of the active substances of the positive and negative electrolyte solutions. During charging, the oxidation reaction of the positive electrode increases the valence state of the active substance, and the reduction reaction of the negative electrode decreases the valence state of the active substance, and the discharge process is the opposite. Unlike ordinary solid-state batteries, flow batteries have positive and/or negative electrolyte solutions that are stored in tanks outside the battery and delivered to the inside of the battery through pumps and pipelines for reaction.
