Hi, I am studying at the Chinese University of Hong Kongmsc in biochemical and biomedical sciencesMicaela has been in Hong Kong for two and a half months, and although there are still many places that I have not visited, I have basically experienced all aspects of studying, Xi and life in Hong Kong.
This article contains the experience of studying at the University of Chinese in Hong Kong and some life experiences, hoping to give it a reference for younger students and younger students.
Geographically, the Chinese University of Hong Kong is the largest university in Hong Kong, because it has a whole mountain, so the natural environment is very good, there are mountains and the sea, so every dayExperience hiking in an area of natural beautyFeelings;
In terms of campus culture, CUHK is one of the major features of:College systemTherefore, the buildings in different areas of the school will be divided by colleges, and each college will hold some activities on a regular basis to deepen the communication between students (although master's students will not join the college). At the same time, the school also holds some workshops on a regular basisEnrich students' extracurricular life, some are about the teaching of academic skills, to help students better use tools to complete homework and **, and some are more concerned about extracurricular activities in terms of students' mental health, including handbooks, paper-cutting, tufting, outdoor inspections, etc., before each activity, each student will be sent an email to invite everyone to sign up, and some of the more popular activities even need to be grabbed.
The format of CUHK's programmes may be different depending on the major, but my major is basically the samelecture modeThe assessment method is mainly a test, and some courses will also require a course report every week, and some will require a ** at the middle and end of the semester
Some professional courses are mainly based on group discussions, that is, the lecturer raises questions in class, then conducts group discussions, pre-presentations in class, and the final course assessment method is mainly to complete the project; There are also some professional courses that will have some extracurricular investigations, and different majors will have many different teaching methods according to the characteristics of different disciplines, and the above are just my personal experience and the experience of individual friends.
In terms of extracurricular Xi and self-Xi, CUHK has a very rich Xi resourcesSeven libraries。I often go to the main map located in the center of the school, where each floor of the library is equipped with computers, printers (there are very few print shops on the streets of Hong Kong, and they are very expensive, and printers in the school are very cheap and convenient) for students and staff to use, and in the basement level of the school garden7*24hOpen (the ground floor is closed on Sundays and public holidays), perfect for mid-term and final Xi.
Each Xi station in the library has sockets and lamps, and most of the seats have baffles or are completely separate, which is very independent and private. If you need to complete group work or need to discuss, basically every floor of the library has a seminar room that can be borrowed, and the seminar room is equipped with desks, chairs, whiteboards, computers, and TVs, which is really super convenient.
In terms of book borrowing, one of the very good features of Hong Kong schools is that each student can apply for an 8-school pass, which allows them to enter the libraries of the eight Hong Kong schools and borrow books.
Daily life in Hong Kong
Although land is scarce in Hong Kong, all living facilities are perfect, and life is still very convenient.
In terms of eating, if you are eating out, first of all, CUHK has 38 canteens and restaurants, which are distributed in all corners of the school, so whether you are in class or Xi by yourself, you can find a restaurant nearby.
Personally, I usually focus on the main imageEat at Vanklean RestaurantThe cheaper and more affordable is the two-free meal and three-free meal located in the large dining hall area, and there are two dishes, three dishes and one soup configuration at about 30HKD. There are also curries, rice bowls, stir-fried vegetables, fried noodles, etc., which can be eaten well for about 40 HKD.
Occasionally, I will go to the restaurant of Wu Yisun Academy located on the mountain to eat, the main Hunan cuisine is very delicious, friends who like spicy taste must not miss it, spicy chicken, dry pot, grilled fish and so on are very authentic. If you are outside the school, there are also a lot of choices, and basically all cuisines can be found, but a meal is basically about 60-100HKD (there will be some cheaper restaurants, but there are so many common meals here).
If you tend to cook by yourself, it will be much more cost-effective than eating in a restaurant, basically there will be supermarkets and markets (similar to vegetable markets) near various residential areas, I most often visit Wellcome and street markets, similar to Wellcome chain supermarkets and Parknshop, etc., mainly depending on which supermarket you live near you, Wellcome will be discounted from time to time, buy some snacks, daily necessities are still very cost-effective.
Some vegetables, fruits and meats will also be discounted regularly**, but relatively speaking, the market will be cheaper, vegetables and fruits will be fresher, the market will be around 5 pm**, basically about 20HKD can buy a large bag of many varieties of vegetables, (but the market can only be paid in cash).
Daily entertainment activities are similar to those in the mainland, cinemas, bars, game halls, etc., Hong Kong people are more health-conscious, so there are parks, sports fields and other entertainment facilities in each neighborhood, and some communities also have clubhouses downstairs for residents to use. There are also swimming pools, halls, sports fields, etc., which students can use by appointment, which is very cost-effective.
About transportation
On-campus transportation: The CUHK campus is very large, so there are many school buses that are free for students and staff to use, and can basically cover all parts of the campus.
Off-campus: Everyday ways to get around in Hong KongMainly by subway and bus。Students who come to study in Hong Kong can apply for a Student Octopus with admission materials, and there is a half-price discount for taking the subway, although it is very expensive to take the subway here, but it is relatively cost-effective for students after half price. The half-price event is not available on buses, but students can register with their cards at the discount machines in the school and get a reduction for each ride.
The bus here is divided into double-decker buses and minibuses, waiting at the station, you have to wave with the driver when you see the car coming, otherwise the driver will drive away directly, the double-decker bus should pay attention to the broadcast station, you need to ring the bell when you are about to arrive, otherwise the driver will drive away directly. The minibus will not report the stop, and the driver needs to shout before getting off the bus to stop, there is a certain probability that the driver cannot hear and cannot understand Mandarin, so the social fear is not familiar with the road and will not be able to sit in Cantonese.
Crossing the border back to the mainland: There are many ways to return to the mainland, you can take the bus or subway to the port, or you can return to the mainland from the West Kowloon High Speed Rail Station Airport. CUHK is relatively close to Shenzhen, so it canTake the subway directly from the school gate to the port for customs clearance, very convenient. If you take the high-speed train, you need to reserve free time in advance, because there are often people queuing up here to miss the train.
About accommodation
The types of accommodation include housing estates, village houses, studios, serviced apartments, etc., which vary from person to person. **Also ranging from around 4,000 HKD to around 15,000 HKD.
Land is scarce in Hong Kong, so housing areas are generally small. Housing estates are similar to residential communities in the mainland, where they basically need to share with others, and each single room is in the first place4000hkd-6000hkdLeft and right (only a few square meters), basically put a bed and a table to be full, and the kitchen and bathroom have to be shared with others. I have classmates around me who choose this type of room, which is relatively cheap, but at the same time, they will also face a lot of problems such as different living Xi from roommates (although the communication is very good and smooth in the early stage, but the problems come out when you really live), so although it is very affordable, you really have to be cautious in the choice of roommates. The house is very small and depressing, and if you still have conflicts with your roommates every day, it will be really uncomfortable.
The pursuit of large space and affordability can choose village houses, generally speaking** low and large space, but relatively speaking, the traffic will not be convenient and there are more mosquitoes (because they are basically houses on the mountainside).
As far as I am concerned, I chose studio, that is, I own a whole house by myself, with a separate bathroom, kitchen and balcony, which is larger than a shared house (about 20 square meters) and very private and free. The community environment is generally very good, and there are gyms, swimming pools, KTVs and so on downstairs for residents to use. The interior of the house will be much newer than the housing estate, but it is higher, basically around 10000HKD-14000HKD.
There is also a kind of serviced apartment that is often considered, there is a more famous Hai Cheng Xuan near CUHK, the location is close to the sea, there will be regular cleaning, but it needs two people and three people to share the house, because it is basically a two-bedroom or three-bedroom house, and the house space is still quite large. The ** of different floors and different locations will be different, but the basic per capita is about the same or even higher than that of the studio (this year, Haichengxuan** is very tight, and the price has increased).
Now it is very convenient to clear customs at the port, and some friends who are studying at CUHK will alsoChoose to live near the Shenzhen portThe rent is much lower than that of Hong Kong, and the living environment will be better, but you need to cross the port every day, and the commuting time will be a little long, especially after classes at night, you are more tired but you still need to go back to Shenzhen. It can only be said that there are trade-offs.
In general, Hong Kong is still very safe to live, basically every community will have access control and security, like my own community from the door to the door of the community need to swipe the card three times, and there is a 24h downstairs housekeeper, after the evening class home is also very safe.
About outings
Personally, I think one of the reasons for the shortage of land in Hong Kong is because there is a lot of land that has not been developed, the natural landscape is well protected, and there are many hiking routes around Hong Kong, because they basically maintain the original style, the routes are basically wild roads, and there are many wild animals, so you need more professional equipment and personnel to lead the team, and you should not act rashly.
Because of the sea, there are many small islands around Hong Kong to play, to the pier basically about 30HKD can take you to the island, you can bask on the beach can also experience snorkeling and other activities, in the vicinity of the University of China is more recommended Saigon, the distance is not very far and there is a direct bus, not only has a very blue and beautiful sea, and there are many delicious snack bars here. If you're good at it, there's plenty of fresh seafood for sale.
When you come to Hong Kong to study, you can also consider going to Hong Kong to get a student annual card, which is still more cost-effective (but it is said that the price will increase soon).
Other situations
Hong Kong because of the sea, soOccasional typhoonsAt present, I have been here for more than two months and have experienced several typhoons, as long as the No. 8 typhoon signal is hung here or the rain reaches the black rain level, work and school will be suspended, don't be too nervous, prepare food and drink for a day or two at home, just close the doors and windows.
Hong Kong has a humid climate, so if there is no light or ventilation for a long time, there is a high chance that things in the home will become moldy. In my house, where there are large windows and the sun is exposed to the sun every day, the legs of the sofa placed near the balcony still occasionally get moldy. I haven't experienced the weather back to Nantian yet, but it is still recommended to have a dryer at home.
FeelThe pressure in Hong Kong is still quite high, studying for a master's degree will still have a lot of tasks and many assignments every week, most of the time actually have to be in the library or at home to Xi, some professional reading really can't read the end, basically everyone sleeps late at night, for homework and exams occasionally overnight. You also need to take care of all aspects of your life while Xi, so be sure to consider whether you are really ready for this challenge before deciding to come here.
