Preface.
Since ancient times, touring mountains and waters has always been a hobby of Chinese. Confucius spent 14 years traveling all over the world, and Xu Xiake spent more than 30 years traveling the mountains and rivers to create "Xu Xiake's Travels". In ancient times, there were no planes and trains, so how did the ancients travel the world?
Confucius's way of wandering.
Confucius was a "hardcore player" who led many students to spread the ideas of benevolence and propriety through his travels. Every time he went out, Confucius rode in a carriage, and although it was bumpy, he was full of enthusiasm for spreading knowledge. In the Analects, it is recorded that Confucius set out from Lu to Wei Guo by horse-drawn carriage, not on foot.
Confucius traveled around the world for 14 years, and along the way, he not only taught his students, but also learned the truth through dialogue with others. Confucius once encountered a child blocking the road on the road, and the child simulated the city and did not give way to the car. Confucius laughed and asked the students to go around the city, thinking it was a smart thing to do. This dialogue became the cornerstone of his ideological sublimation, and Confucius was revered as a sage by later generations.
Xu Xiake's way of wandering.
In contrast, Xu Xiake is a traveler who "can play and enjoy". He had a wealthy family and did not need to worry about financial problems, so he took his servants out with him and traveled in various ways. Riding boats, sedan chairs, carriages, horseback riding, and walking, he traveled most of China. Xu Xiake's travels are luxurious and varied, but his financial strength and love of nature make him a master of travel.
An alternative way to travel – sleeping on a sleeper.
During the Wei and Jin dynasties, a unique Confucianism emerged – metaphysics. This gave birth to the "lying tour", that is, to feel the beauty of the great rivers and mountains by appreciating landscape paintings. The ancients appreciated the scenery through the "lying tour", as if they had been in it through the scenery in the painting. This method is similar to the modern "cloud tour", through a variety of ** to enjoy the scenery, although there is no physical scene, but as if immersive.
Epilogue. Although the ancients did not possess modern airplanes and trains, they traveled around the world by boat, sedan chair, horse-drawn carriage, horseback riding, and walking. These methods may seem "clumsy" in modern times, but they were the most convenient in ancient times. The ancients also created an alternative form of travel, "lying down", which offered those who could not experience it first-hand the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of nature.
