Hello everyone, it is an honor to be able to work with you on the ancient history and literature. Today, we will take a piece of history from the Three Kingdoms period, specifically about Chen Dao, who is little-known but whose martial arts are comparable to that of one of the Five Tiger Generals.
During the Three Kingdoms period, Shu's national strength was limited, and its economy and talents were relatively scarce. Although we often mention the Five Tiger Generals of Shu, in fact, the title of "Five Tiger Generals of Shu" does not exist, but only evolved in the propaganda in "Romance of the Three Kingdoms". In addition to the five generals Guan, Zhang, Zhao, Ma, and Huang, there is also a fierce general with strong martial arts, and he is Chen Dao.
Chen Zhi does not have many records in history, but his martial arts are not inferior to Zhao Yun, one of the five tiger generals, and his position is second only to Zhao Yun. In 196 AD, Liu Bei served as the pastor of Yuzhou, and Chen Zhi defected to him. At that time, Liu Bei was in dire need of talents, and Chen Zhi's martial arts and loyalty made him an important right-hand man for Liu Bei. Liu Bei appointed Chen Zhi as the leader of his Praetorian Guard to manage the "White Soldiers". This white soldier was Liu Bei's Praetorian Guard, comparable to the Tiger Guards under Cao Cao's command. The high level of Chen Zhi's strength also reflects the strong combat effectiveness of the Bai Yu soldiers from the side.
Chen Zhi performed well in the Praetorian Guard and became a security barrier for Liu Bei's family. Even after Zhao Yun joined, Chen Zhi still worked with Zhao Yun to protect Liu Bei's family. Zhuge Liang once affirmed Chen Zhi's martial arts in a letter to Zhuge Jin, calling the Bai Yu soldiers under his command "the superior soldiers of the West".
According to the Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms, Chen Zhi was appointed governor of Yong'an in 226 AD and stationed in Yong'an Town. Unfortunately, however, Chen Zhi later died of illness in Yong'an.
Overall, Chen Zhi was a martial arts and loyal general who played an important role in the history of Shu. Although his name is little known, his contribution and status were highly appreciated and trusted by Liu Bei at the time.
